Color has the power to transform a space, shift a mood, and change the way we experience art and design.

Sometimes, the most memorable palettes are the simplest—defined not by trends, but by balance, contrast, and harmony.

Save this post for the next time you’re starting a painting, planning a palette, or simply looking for colour inspiration.

Take a look at some paint colors you might’ve never used before.

While the modern artist’s palette relies on safe, synthetic formulations, the history of color is a far more volatile landscape. Behind the luminous flesh tones of Vermeer and the striking, fleeting reds of Van Gogh lies a history shaped by toxic chemistry, macabre ingredients, and profound ethical dilemmas.

From pigments harvested from antiquity to hues bound with pure arsenic, these five historical colors have been permanently retired from production.

1: Edgar Degas, “Dancers Pink and Green,” 1890, Joseph M.W. Turner, “Teignmouth,” 1812, James McNeill Whistler, “The White Girl,” 1861-62
2: Martin Drolling, “Interior of a Kitchen”, 1815.
3: Edgar Degas, “Dancers Pink and Green,” 1890.
4: Vincent van Gogh, “The Starry Night,” 1889
5: Vincent van Gogh, “The Oise at Auvers,” 1890
6: Johannes Vermeer, “Lady Writing a Letter with Her Maid,” 1670-1671

Impressionism changed the way artists saw the world—not by painting every detail, but by capturing a moment, a feeling, and the way light transformed a scene.
From shimmering landscapes to bustling cafés and quiet gardens, the movement celebrated everyday life through loose brushwork, vibrant colour, and fleeting impressions. More than 150 years later, its influence can still be seen across contemporary art and visual culture.

The Renaissance transformed how European artists pictured the world. Beginning in Italy and spreading across Europe, painters and sculptors revisited classical ideas while studying anatomy, perspective,
nature and light. Their work was also shaped by patrons, from the Church to wealthy merchants and
rulers, who commissioned art to communicate faith, influence and status.

From Botticelli’s mythology to Raphael’s balanced compositions, this carousel is a visual introduction to
an era whose experiments still shape the way we see images today.

Save it as a starting point for your next museum visit.

1: Sandro Botticelli, ‘The Birth of Venus’, c. 1485.

An artwork’s title can describe what we see or send our imagination in an entirely different direction. Kandinsky’s Composition VIII is a world of geometric relationships; Cy Twombly’s Leda and the Swan
turn a myth into restless marks. Joan Miró, Helen Frankenthaler and Barnett Newman use titles that
suggest beginnings, landscapes or heroic figures without illustrating them literally.

Sometimes a title is less an explanation than an invitation to interpret. Swipe through these five
artworks, then tell us which title surprised you most.

Halloween has always belonged to art. Long before costumes, horror films and pumpkin displays, artists were already painting the things that still unsettle us today: witches, ghosts, nightmares, death, superstition and the supernatural.

From Francisco de Goya’s witches and Henry Fuseli’s The Nightmare to Hokusai’s ghosts, Francis Bacon’s screaming figures and Andy Warhol’s electric chair, the darker side of art history reveals how different periods imagined fear and what each culture was afraid of.

But Halloween in art is not always sinister. Grandma Moses and Bo Bartlett turn it into ritual, costume and childhood memory, while artists such as Henri Rousseau, Fausto Zonaro and Hieronymus Bosch show how easily the strange, mysterious and uncanny can enter an image without ever mentioning Halloween at all.

A small tour through Halloween in art history, Gothic art, supernatural imagery, famous paintings, witches in art, ghosts in art, horror in art and the history of fear in visual culture.
