Mediums 3: Fabrication | Stack Bond | Critic: Caleb Ehly | Stack Bond revisits historic methods of brick laying and weaving to reimagine them using contemporary techniques of fabrication. A traditional stack bond involves laying bricks directly above each other vertically, without overlapping mortar joints. Using the robotic arm at Pratt, clay 3d printed tiles were created and assembled in the stack bond formation, but instead of traditional mortar, they’re held in place by a vertical rail that slides into the pre-fabricated slot within each tile that is cast into the floor slab. Using only two profiles, the project achieves a level of engagement with light to produce a wash of shadows in elevation. This conceptual facade mock-up explored different methods of fabrication, material expression, and representation of abstract ideas into real world speculative solutions for building techniques.
