FAMFest Day 2! IRL, you’ve never met a nicer guy, but Craig Colclough sure knows how to play a villain on the stage and screen. Case in point: Gerhard in The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay during The Metropolitan Opera’s 25-26 season.

Introducing The Saddlebag Smoker.

Texas smoke. Wherever you wander.

Small enough to carry into the woods. Big enough to smoke a couple sausages. Built with the same completely unnecessary level of seriousness we bring to most things.

This little guy makes its screen debut in Episode 1 of Elevated Spaces — on YouTube. Over 800 subscribers!

Come for the treehouses.
Stay for the unnecessarily small barbecue equipment.

To be clear, in case you are wondering, this is part of a section of @elevatedspaces.tv that I call “Whits Free Idea”. You can have the idea, just give me credit. Unless it’s a bust, then it’s on you.

Whit’s free idea runs during the credits. I do not. I prefer not to run. taken in Portland, Oregon by @colcloughopera

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how we pull off one of our biggest gags in Falstaff. 🧺

Thinking he’s about to get lucky, Sir John Falstaff hides inside a laundry basket to escape the furious Ford—only for the basket to be tossed straight into the river.

So how do we make it happen? This basket was custom-built by the Royal Opera House in 1977 and features a hidden trap door that lets Falstaff (played by Craig Colclough / @colcloughopera) sneak in and out during the chaos of Act II. While the basket is dragged across the stage—and eventually dumped into the “river”—Craig has already slipped away through a concealed escape hatch in the set.

And that big splash at the end? That’s the handiwork of our backstage crew 😉—just one more BTS trick that keeps the comedy flowing at LA Opera. Come see the magic (and the mischief) live in Falstaff! 🎭 by @colcloughopera

I’ve been blessed my entire career, having my mind and artistry expanded by the great James Conlon @conlonconductor . It is a sincere honor being in his “Farewell” concert tonight here at @laopera. I put “farewell” in quotes as I believe he (surely) has already filled his schedule with the next projects, lectures and organizations to nurture. by @colcloughopera
