Not apologizing about making you read most of the libretto for the final scene of act 3. It’s such a big feeling type of story and there were so many decisions I loved in this production ! taken in The Metropolitan Opera by @cold.tulip

My opera research continues! I saw “What to Wear” at @bam_brooklyn a few weeks ago and loved it. Have been thinking a lot about fashion, fascism, absurdity and aesthetics in the wake of the production.

Richard Foreman really had a sense of how to use maximalism, humor, and absurdity to make something beyond the sum of its parts. Love when work works through play.

This opera will stay with me for a long time thanks for @prototypefest @anniebparson @plazar_ @bigdancetheater for remounting this epic production

Loving there is a whole festival happening right now that focuses on an expansive sense of what opera can be. I saw back to back nights of @prototypefest shows this week with my talented opera singing friend @patrycja.soprano

Sometimes I don’t feel the need to talk much about shows after I see them, but we chatted so long after seeing Precipice on Thursday night and it was good for my heart <3

She has me thinking and dreaming new things up!

Opera is cool. drama and intensity are good. I’ve cried a lot on the subway this week but I’m just sensitive and that’s okay 🥲 by @cold.tulip

Have been really inspired by opera for a while and committing myself to learning and thinking more about it this year 🤍

I also frequently try to take notes when I’m watching stuff (live music/dance/theater/movies, etc..) and sometimes I think I should write little essays or articles, but I usually lack the follow through…so instead! i’m gonna try and be diligent in typing out and sharing some of my notes with you guys, cause why not!

2026! OPERA! NOTES! DILIGENCE!

Tonight I saw Charles Edwards’ new production of Bellini’s “I Puritani” at @metopera by @cold.tulip

My bestie @odibz is extremely pregnant right now and I am extremely excited about her and @adamferriss becoming some of the coolest parents in the world.

But will always remember this beautiful day in the park — shortly after they were engaged and before I officiated their wedding. The sun was setting and I still hadn’t shot much on my bolex so I was worried we’d have no image on this roll of film but I shot it anyway with enough faith to know it would be a good document if it turned out 😌

We were talking about how we could make millions on an app that judged your pee health and maybe watching un ballon dans le parc.

I love them and their big smiles, and their lovely feet, and their silly hearts 💗can’t wait to chill in the parc w their babe one day soon by @cold.tulip

Last night’s “LIVES ON FIRE” screening was so beautiful!! An honor to celebrate @riverselby and their new memoir “Hotshot: a life on fire” through this program inspired by the richness and complexity of their book.

The films in the program covered a wide range of relationships to fire, trauma, our relationships to land/earth/home, how we connect and relate to others, how we can come to understand ourselves and also the insignificance of the self... Millennium was FULL! My sprit felt FULL! I loved seeing the faces of @riverselby , @final.tif and @netaraja glow with warmth from everyone in the room.

Major thank you to @josefwakemanmgf and @millennium_film . Millennium Film Workshop is a piece of heaven in bushwick where people engage and connect. The conversations buzzing in the room were shared with smiling faces and generosity.

First time programming for me but won’t be the last — stay tuned for future developments. Really love bringing film and video work in conversation with other art forms, so if you want to collaborate on something feel free to reach out! taken in Millennium Film Workshop by @cold.tulip

Look at these beautiful stills from the 8 films that will be playing on This Thursday (Aug 21) at 7:30//8pm as a part of the “Lives on Fire” Screening/Reading at Millennium Film Workshop!

It was an honor to watch so many shorts that came in from the open call – the final program reflects a range of themes that are woven into River’s memoir but these works were born from their own lives and histories.

In all honesty I have been a little disillusioned about filmmaking, but making this program gives me new hope in a new way.

As a 1st time curator I feel echos of this Lauren Berlant quote (that I’m possibly taking out of context…)

“In circulation one becomes happy in an ordinary, often lovely, way because the weight of being in the world is distributed into space, time, noise, and other beings.”

It feels cool to be an energy circulating more people’s films and ideas, making a little lovely celebration of artists all willing to slow down to create work that is attentive, personal, and earnest. The material is wonderfully diverse: docs, personal videos/film, animation, work that explores material, works that meditates on details of regular life or the damage that can feel irreparable.

River’s memoir “HOTSHOT: A Life on Fire” pushes far beyond the personal and was a great source to organize a program around. Their work and dedication to their craft and writing inspired this whole program – SO COME HEAR THEM READ ! and WATCH A BUNCH OF FILMS!

Doors at 7:30// Reading starting promptly at 8:00 // Film program TRT ~1 hr. // Discussion / Q&A after

SCREENING/READING -
Thurs. Aug 21 Doors at 7:30 pm- LIVES ON FIRE

River Selby will be reading from their new memoir “Hotshot: A Life on Fire” which navigates the personal and environmental dangers of wildland firefighting through a lens of intersectionality. Extremely personal memoir is interwoven with the damage of colonization – recognizing wounds of personal and national pasts and the effort that is needed to grow new futures.

George Saunders describes the book as “A beautiful reflection on justice, the environment, the self, and much more.”

The short films in the program have been curated by Kati Rehbeck @cold.tulip around themes reflected in @riverselby ’s book, broadly related to “fire” but also investigating how we make sense of damage while finding what keeps us burning or calms our flames. taken in Millennium Film Workshop by @cold.tulip

I’m wildly into thinking about intimacy in different dimensions so I’m entirely touched to be part of this program by @michelesaintmichel at @millennium_film !

This Friday, June 20th my first film “4622 Stillwater Circle” will screen as part of their “Quantum Intimacies” Program — I’ve been a longtime audience attendee for Millennium screenings but this is the first time I’ll be sharing my work there which is so exciting. Also this film came out during the pandemic, so it had very few irl screenings, so feels very sweet to share it all these years later🥰

Come through at 8pm and enjoy the gallery opening and film program!
