TONIGHT: FATBOI SHARIF + COLD LIGHT + RETROPXSSY

Baba Yaga’s Hut presents three distinct approaches to rap tonight, moving between Fatboi Sharif’s abstract lyricism and horror-charged soundscapes, Cold Light’s sub-bass and arcane production, and retropxssy’s collision of punk, hip-hop and dark electronics.

Known as the Garden State Gargoyle, New Jersey artist and Backwoodz Studioz artist Fatboi Sharif has developed a singular form of avant-garde hip-hop in which fragmented writing, shifting voices and unsettling production are inseparable. His reference points run from Sun Ra and Alice Coltrane to Cannibal Ox, Rob Zombie and Pig Destroyer, alongside a sustained engagement with genre-pushing film and literature.

Sharif treats performance as an extension of the work rather than a straightforward presentation of recorded material. His sets build towards direct exchanges with the audience, often ending in a call and response of “MY FAMILY!” His 2017 debut, Ape Twin, returned to vinyl in 2025 with additional tracks, reflecting the lasting strangeness of a record made nearly a decade earlier.

Cold Light is a six-person collective spread across Bristol, London, Hungary and Portland. The group grew out of a Bristol label and live project before developing into a collaboration between rappers and producers working across cities and continents. Their music moves between hip-hop, dub and illbient, setting real-world lyricism against elusive beats rooted in sub-bass. A debut album is forthcoming on Brian Foote’s FO label, following releases connected to PTP, Felt and Ghost Notes Worldwide.

Opening the night, retropxssy combines punk rap with dark electronica in performances shaped equally by music and theatre. Her work considers womanhood from inside the moshpit, with sets built from physical intensity and storytelling.

The Garden State Gargoyle, Fatboi Sharif, is an American avant-garde Hip-Hop artist that is looking to take over the globe with his abstract lyricism, spine-chilling soundscapes, illuminating intensity, and his million-dollar smile. It is either the highest level or nothing for Sharif when it comes to putting out projects and performing on stage. He treats the live show as a spiritual experience where Sharif takes the crowd on a phenomenon in which a person perceives the world as if from a location outside their physical body. By the closing track he tells the crowd to involve themselves in a call & response that simply repeats “MY FAMILY!” because by the end of his set he’s grown a connection with the crowd that could only equate with that of your family.

Different channels of inspiration are always a must. Inspired by Sun Ra, Parliament Funkadelic, Alice Coltrane, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Ultramagnetic MC’s, Freestyle Fellowship, Cannibal Ox, Rob Zombie, Pig Destroyer just to name a few.

but first, let's all say hi to B. this is now both an animal and radio account.

I've been a huge of the work of Cold Light (from Bristol and London, UK and many points elsewhere) since late 2023. This is Cold Light's second time on the show.

This mix, done in advance of their LP Coldtron2 (out this Friday) features a ton of forthcoming and unreleased dubs, tunes, meditations, and collabs that are largely being heard in the wild on Panoramic for the first time. It's a humbling honor to host this and I want to thank the whole crew and Dean for trusting me with this.

This job rules. In addition to the Cold Light record, two of the Richmond artists featured in the episode (improv collective @elasticmedium and vocalist @bijoux.nouveau ) both have excellent records that are newly out and well worth the spin.

The expansive practice of Yaz Lancaster encompasses experimental electroacoustic performances, notated compositions, open format DJ-ing, music journalism, steel pan, collage-based poetry, collaborative work, and organizing DIY shows across New York City’s underground and nightlife scenes. Yaz frequently performs solo sets with violin/voice/electronics that comprise songs, improvisations, and composed music – aptly displayed on their sophomore album AFTER (PTP, 2025). They find joy in collaboration – they’ve worked with artists like Alex Zhang Hungtai, claire rousay, Dreamcrusher, KING VISION ULTRA, Nyokabi Kariuki, and OHYUNG. Yaz additionally performs as “death ambient” and hardcore DJ project “medium.” in deep collaboration with creative partner gg200bpm. Recent highlights include performing at Dweller Forever (at Public Records), Paragon, The Lot Radio, Issue Project Room, The Music Gallery (Toronto), Nowadays, Fridman Gallery, and Gaudeamus Festival in Utrecht. They are a member of socially-active PROTECT THE PEACE (PTP) artist collective; and founder/curator of the experimental performance series HEAVY HEARTS.
