Earl McKenzie and Clive Gardiner are two of the baddest cats on the planet that you may have or may not have heard of.

They are two lifelong friends who grew up in London who shared a vast love of soul, funk, and jazz music respectively. While they were teenagers, they created the band “The Class of ‘78” but would become known as McKenzie & Gardiner in college.

While this technically isn’t a full lp release and more of a collection of demos, they were signed to Streetwave Records and began recording those demos in 1983.

Although the songs were created over 40 years ago, this originally was released in 2013. What this essentially is going back in a time capsule of a duo that never perhaps broke through at the time.

Still, boogie and funk enthusiasts will know them and appreciate their legacy years later. With people like myself continuing to share their music alongside with other modern soul and boogie evangelists, people like McKenzie & Gardiner can be rediscovered again and again by newer generations.

Personally I’ve always loved their work as both of these cats are multi instrumentalists and did everything themselves in the studio. Musicianship is everything.

More importantly, their lyrics have always been relatable touching on subjects like relationships, love, and having a good time.

Thank you for the music and everything you do @_clivegardiner & @earlmckenzie39

Enjoy!

If you’ve ever been to the land of PHUNK (🍊Orange County, CA) you’ve probably heard this record multiple times.

However, hailing all the way from Houston, Texas; this funk quartet would release their only album on the HCRC label in 1983.

While it is titled under a group name, Glass, this one was largely written and produced by John Williams by himself. He would later use other names such as “Jonnie Baby” or “Mikki Bleu” but this project is what he is most known for. He even had a brief stint with Club Nouveau but never recorded with them.

This full release is something serious. It has been sampled many times and still bumped in and outside of the 714. Funkateers and DJs know this one well.

This is one of those records again, if you don’t have it you need it. Every boogie and funk collector will surely have this in their arsenal.

Shoutout to the homie @shortstack.lightning for hooking me up with this one. Appreciate you playa 😎

Enjoy!

Released in 1982 on the Canadian disco label J.C. Records, Suzy Q would drop this follow up album out of Montreal entitled, “Don’t You Stop That Feeling.”

Interesting to find out that Suzy Q actually wasn’t just one person or even one woman. It was a studio project created by Montreal producer Jerry Cucuzzella. It was created with a fixed group rather than just one solo singer or front woman.

For this albums release, the singer would be identified as Michelle Mills. She would also be the one who would appear on picture sleeves. The other two women that would be associated with the Suzy Q name were Carol Jiani, and Angie Vileno respectively.

While i prefer this album to Suzy Q’s debut release, their biggest commercial hit is on the other album. I bring this up as Carol Jiani sang on it but was never credited on the track, “Get On Up and Do It Again.”

Despite all the confusion, Suzy Q’s influence has been made on the boogie scene and you’ll for sure hear this one within those realms.

No judgement but stay off the perico when you play this joint.

Enjoy!

After many years of anticipation and waiting, this Miami native had already been making waves before releasing her debut 2026 bomb entitled “In The Moonlight.”

If you’re from Los Angeles / Orange County California, @miahoneydeux is a name you’ve long heard many times. Countless repeats of her earlier work such as “Something ‘Bout Your Love”, “Creatures Of The Night”, and “Love Me Right” respectively.

The record was produced by @gil.masuda who has worked with her previously on earlier projects as mentioned and this one is no different. It blends elements of funk, r&b, synth-pop, and modern boogie accents.

It’s not a project that sounds like a nostalgic throwback, but rather more intimate as the songwriting gives a glimpse of Mia’s personal testimony on themes such as love, confidence, and overall human relationship.

Given the nature of the albums themes from danceable grooves to more emotionally reflective songs, this one is perfect for late night drives, dance floors, or just chilling at home. I have partaken to all 3 of those things to this album.

It’s safe to say that everyone is proud of how far she’s come and I for one, look forward to what the future brings in her musical career.

She’s the queen of the bedroom boogie for a reason.

Enjoy!

Sedan would release their only and self titled release in 1985 on the Cotillion record label.

Led by the creative force of Craig E. Robinson, he’s a name you might not recognize but have surely heard of if you listen to funk or modern soul.

His contributions span across decades with the likes of Dayton, Melba Moore, Slave, George Clinton, Bel Biv Devoe, and many more.

Like of the time period, this release is heavy on syncopated rhythms, layered guitars, synths, and multi part vocal harmonies.

This record is so well polished and in my opinion, has a very good balance of technical musicianship and contemporary production. Really well thought out parts across the board.

The A side is mainly for romancing, and the B side is for dancing.

The influence of Ohio funk is unmatched. So many good acts and bands have come from there. This is another severely slept on record but all the true funksters know it. If you ain’t got this, it’s probably time to spend some money. Easily a 5/5 album.

Enjoy!

Another Memphis group emerging from the ashes of the Stax record label, Kwick would release this album which would be their 3rd and final album in 1983 with Capitol Records.

Before changing the name to Kwick in 1980, they were known as The Newcomers. They had regularly opened up for other established acts such as The Bar-Kays and The Emotions.

Members of The Bar-Kays such as James Alexander (Jazze Pha’s Dad) and Allen A. Jones would produce the record. Having a few hits in the 70s gave them a head start with solid soul credentials.

By 1980, the band would add a 4th member and thus change the groups name and change their sound and direction. They were no longer a smooth soul trio, but instead a quartet of heavy hitting synthesized funk.

While Kwick has other cuts in their catalog, I find this release to be my overall favorite and listen to this one the most.

If you happen to venture out and go to an event where true funkateers are spinning vinyl, you’ll probably hear a Kwick track at some point.

Enjoy!

Born in France, Serge Ponsar would bless the world with his 1983 effort on the Warner Bros label, entitled “Back To The Light.”

Despite being recorded by a French artist, the album has a distinctly American boogie and early electro sound that often fools people into thinking it came from New York or Los Angeles. His accent is passable for American in my opinion as well.

The album was released during the transition from disco to boogie, capturing the sound of dance music as synthesizers and drum machines began taking center stage.

Like most international acts of the time, production is tight and polished. To my ears, heavy compression and lots of direct inputs for instrumentation. One of the best from the era to my ears at least.

This one is pretty well known across the boogie scene but it never hurts to put someone on who may not have known. Truly every song on here is good. 5 star boogie.

Serge Ponsar passed in 1993.

Enjoy!

Dutch Duo, Oattes Van Schaik or better known as The Limit, consisted of Bernard Oattes and Rob Van Schaik. They would release their only self titled effort in 1985 on the Portrait record label.

A fantastic slice of Dutch boogie. The Limit were forced to change the name of the group and the name of the album due to legal issues predominately here in the US. The album would be later named Love Attaxx for the American market.

This album is interesting as the group had already recorded and released a few of the songs as singles prior to the albums release in the US. It features American musicians such as David Sanborn and Gwen Guthrie respectively. It was also recorded in several countries such as the Netherlands, the UK, the US, and Belgium which is unusual in itself.

The Limit produced, wrote, and arranged much of their own material. They would also help other acts behind the scenes under The Limit Productions.

This album pushed the boogie sound in the mid 1980s by blending electro, synth pop, and elements of disco and damn near every track is a stepper. I will say the original yellow street sign cover is cooler to me but the songs are the same on either version. Grab a copy while you can.

Enjoy!

HB Concept is the stage name of Henri Brown. He is a Canadian born musician, actor, and film producer. He has been in the game over 4 decades now.

Coming from a musical family, his mother was a performer, along with his aunt Eleanor Collins (she was known as Canadas First Lady of Jazz.) Did I mention his cousin was Jimi Hendrix? Yeah, crazy cool.

Henri’s musical career began in the early 80s with the release of a 12 inch single entitled “I Don’t Want To Be Alone.” He does have a couple of full releases but this one in particular is pretty special in my opinion.

While this album entitled “Unreleased Archives” is from 2011, the music largely comes from material recorded much earlier from the 1980s. It is indeed a window into tracks that were never given a proper commercial release. Limited to just 300 copies, if you can find this, you need to have it.

It is truly an enjoyable piece of funk artistry, and if you haven’t seen his music video for his song “I’m Your Prisoner” on YouTube, you’re missing out. It’s a true gem.

Today, Henri Brown continues to perform and keep himself busy in an array of artistic endeavors. From setting stages on fire on the Experience Hendrix Tour, to releasing new music, and acting in multiple projects, there’s no telling what he’ll do next.

Thank you for all of your musical and creative contributions @henribrownentertainment the world appreciates it.

I would also like to thank my homie @xlmiddleton for hooking me up with this and thank you to everyone at @saltboxrecords who make and keep the store possible.

Enjoy!

In 1982, a trio of brothers would release their only self titled release on the My Disc record label, manufactured by CBS.

Little is known about these three brothers, as there is no public record about their hometown or where they began. Considering they were distributed on a major label, that would suggest that the label at least saw enough potential in them to make such a move.

The record was produced by Ray Reid and William Anderson (Crown Heights Affair, and Empress) which may suggest the group was from the NJ or NY area.

Removing speculation, this album is a burner. It’s got all the right things that you would want from the time period. Being they were a family group, that would explain the great structured vocal interplay and chemistry between the brothers.

This is one of those albums that has become more sought after than its initial commercial release date and for good reason. It’s got the funky cuts with some tasteful ballads as well. And everyone knows I love ballads.

Wherever these brothers are, I want to say thank you for your musical contributions and thank you for the inspiration Bernard, John, and Walter Lindsey.

Enjoy!

Perhaps underrated, appropriately rated? I don’t know but here’s a jammin’ LP brought to by Philly World Records in 1983.

Out of Chicago, Cashmere formed in 1982 after the group Heaven & Earth disbanded. They would work with Bryan Loren on this album.

There would be several personal changes while Dwight Dukes would remain as the most consistent contributor to the groups name. However, there are some other names that are worth mentioning such as Mr. McKinley Horton.

Everyone within the group would leave by 1985 after their 2nd release to work on other notable titles.

Still, this one has got some jams.

Perhaps they could have been bigger if it weren’t due to lousy management, personal issues, or perhaps bad timing. They couldn’t seem to shake the initial debacle of Heaven & Earth.

Regardless, I’m still bumpin’ this to this day.

Enjoy!

Another absolute classic from the Salsoul label from 1982. (Although my copy is the Rams Horn pressing.”

The Jammers were essentially a “super group” of NY based musicians who were hand picked by none other than Richie Weeks.

Members and other contributors came from other bands such as Instant Funk and Brass Construction. Didn’t hurt that Shep Pettibone also worked on the mixes.

If that wasn’t enough, you got more people like Debbie Blackwell Cook and the legendary Jocelyn Brown on here as well.

While the album is 7 tracks long, it feels short, making you want more. Every song on here is dance oriented and guaranteed to please. The live instrumentation is lush and full. Not over produced like some records of its day.

The Jammers would only release this one self titled album but had a short string of singles until 1984. This record is very DJ friendly. But what do I know? I’m not a DJ.

Enjoy!
