After slowly shrinking the cadence between 0.01mg reductions (I started super slow), I have finally reached the point of daily 0.01mg reductions. I haven’t noticed any type of withdrawal symptoms yet, which is promising. I’m hoping to show the world that maybe there is a safer way to taper off these things, especially for us long-term, high-risk child patients…

My marathon training is going so well. I’m planning to run the Last Chance Marathon in Bellingham WA on December 31st. It will be cold, but that’s kinda my thing.

My ideal cold plunge weather is still somewhere distant…but it’s closing in! I’m planning to hold my annual “Every Day of January” plunge challenge again in a few months.

Grateful for your encouragement 💙

It is hard to know when to push and when to listen. A major internal conflict that we all face in antidepressant withdrawal is whether to move faster or slower. We know the answer…it’s slower. But we get frustrated with the time that takes.

Last year I moved too fast. I was overly confident after a successful Klonopin taper in 2024 and decided to make two “cut and hold” dose reductions over a 12 week period. It sent my nervous system into a protracted withdrawal state for the next 7-8 months. After almost 18 months since that last reduction in March 2025, I have finally resumed the taper…but I’ll never do a “cut and hold” strategy again.

The liquid microtaper has been really encouraging so far. I’ve noticed virtually ZERO withdrawal symptoms since beginning, albeit on much smaller dose reductions. I am hopeful.

I don’t want anyone to take this video about “pushing forward” as meaning “be reckless” or “ignore the warning signs.” That’s not what I’m saying. I’m trying to highlight that after a year and a half of recovering, I am now trusting my body and this process to continue forward.

We keep going. Because what is life, if not to feel?

I’m continuing to shrink the cadence between dose reductions. I put just 5 days in between this latest 0.01mg drop from 7.46 to 7.45mg, down from 14 days between 7.49 and 7.48.

Marathon training is continuing, albeit hard after my work days. But I’m sticking to the regimen and making sure I eat more, which is something I didn’t pay much attention to at first. I’m running the half marathon here in Boise next weekend, which I’m excited for. Then it’s fall/winter training until the full marathon in December.

I had a long talk with a friend who’s mother has been on psychiatric drugs for the last 30-ish years. She asked me what she could do, as a daughter who loves her mother very much, to better support her mom wanting to come off the drugs. My answer was that instead of expressing “concern,” she should express curiosity. Curiosity in her path and confidence while she goes down it. Concern doesn’t help. It comes from a place of fear. Communicating with that family member that you are curious of their process and believe in their resolve is much more effective. Your curiosity allows them to share the details of their process in a way that helps you to better understand (while also allowing them to feel seen and heard). And you, as the loved one, can be there for them when they go through it.

Many won’t understand your path. But maybe that isn’t a sign of your inability to communicate, but rather that you’re in a unique place that isn’t meant to be understood by everyone.

We shouldn’t explain ourselves just to obtain permission to feel okay or at peace. We can feel that on our own. The experience doesn’t require validation or approval.

Back in 2023, I was stuck on 20mg of Lexapro and 0.25mg of Klonopin. The last 3 years have been brutal as I’ve tried to break free.

Today is a new page - after spending years taking down the SSRI to 7.5mg (slowly) and the benzo to zero, then stabilizing…I’m now embarking on a new chapter.

I am now at an SSRI dose equivalent to when I was 10-12 years old. This is my first time here in 26 years, so I’m starting out this taper very carefully. I sat at 7.49mg for 13 days. Now I’ve been at 7.48mg for 6 days. I haven’t noticed any withdrawal symptoms, so my hope is to move to 7.47mg soon and start shrinking the days in between each micro-cut. The goal is to highlight that a microtapering approach may just keep withdrawal symptoms in the background. I really hope it does.

I am exhausted, but I’m more determined to feel and discover myself than anything else in life. Nothing else matters right now. Because what is life, if not to feel?

I’ve begun the descent to zero, but it will take awhile to get there. I’m hoping these thoughts can help others who are considering the same path.

If you happen to find yourself on the same journey, comment “Outro” and I’ll send you a link to sign up for a consultation with clinicians who understand the hyperbolic tapering process.

I am feeling a shift toward a more bold, unapologetic delivery of content. I don’t know quite how that unfolds over time, but I’d like to highlight that it’s coming.

There is a deep desire for change stirring within me - and as I prepare to resume tapering this fall, I need to motivate myself more than ever. I am absolutely scared shitless, but nothing has ever meant more to me.

I deserve everything that this world has to offer. And you do, too. It’s time to channel all of this rage and fury toward the life I deserve.

FREE THE FEELINGS.

Sorry for the sharp language, I know I’m better than that. The NYT article has now been published, and it highlights my quest for a life without antidepressants in a way I’ve never shared here.

I’m grateful for how I’ve turned out and trust wholeheartedly that my family was just trying to do what was best for me. But staying on these drugs for the rest of my life is equivalent to accepting that I was always broken since a child. And I can’t do that. I can’t accept that.

My point is not to villify every situation where these drugs are used, but rather to highlight the growing occurrence of prescribed children reaching adulthood and wondering “What happened? How did I get here?”

And I hope that I can also highlight how important it is to move slowly off of these drugs if anyone ever decides to go that route.

If you find yourself on the same journey as me, comment “Outro” and I’ll send you a link to sign up for a free consultation with a group of clinicians who actually understand the tapering process.

I didn’t realize I could ever successfully taper until I found a video of Mark Horowitz (cofounder of Outro) back in 2022 explaining withdrawal symptoms in an interview. For 20+ years, since I was a little kid, doctors always told me that symptoms from reducing dose were a “relapse of my condition.” But Mark said something nobody else was saying - after years of developing tolerance and homeostasis on these drugs, the experience tapering off actually led to withdrawal symptoms disrupting that homeostasis. And the real kicker was that these symptoms actually looked like anxiety, depression, and many other things that could be confused for a “relapse in condition.”

This was the first big “ah-ha” moment for me, but there have still been many parts of this process that I never expected. This is where Outro has been extremely helpful.

I’ve reached the end of sitting, the end of processing a void I’ll never fully understand. I’ve spent enough days trying to mentally claw back the time lost. I have felt the void deeply, but now it is time to move.

Somebody once said that the windshield is bigger than the rearview for a reason, and I felt that. Preparing for this marathon feels like looking through that windshield. I’m uncertain of what’s to come, but I’m certain that the direction is forward.
