Over the weekend, we screened Coldwater Kitchen with a dynamic room of chefs, educators, activists and hospitality professionals, all convening to discuss feeding a shared a future. We know the definition of the future is incomplete if the voices, needs and perspectives of people impacted by the criminal justice system are not included. Last week, the Coldwater Kitchen team along with two of our impact campaign advisors Adam Grant of @abrighterway_org and Muhammad Abdul - Hadi of @downnorth_pizza kicked off Second Chances Month at the U.S. Capitol where we had the opportunity to screen clips of the film, followed by a day of public education meetings with lawmakers and their offices.Second Chances Month is an important initiative that has been recognized for years and was recently introduced to be formally recognized with a bipartisan, bicameral resolution in Congress. The iniative shines light on the collateral consequences of incarceration that millions of formerly incarcerated people navigate daily and the efforts to promote fairness and access to opportunity for people who have been directly impacted by the criminal legal system. In a room full of lawmakers, their teams and other stakeholders that have the power to shape laws and policies, and direct resources toward our communities, the men of Coldwater Kitchen and our advisors were able to share what they believe guests should know about community members who are coming home from prison. If you’ve seen Coldwater Kitchen, you probably remember the Christmas scene — and the ornate, candy-covered gingerbread house built by some of the guys in Chef Jimmy Lee-Tbo Hill’s program.Well, it’s an annual tradition, and Chef Hill just dropped a photo of this year’s effort.
