A portrait of an old man that has gone through the trials and tribulations of commercial fishing work at sea. When I took this shot of him it was his 3rd month living out at sea, anchored just outside the Pavon Bay, in the middle of the ocean, waiting for a catch big enough to allow him and his crew to go home to the northern part of the country. The other portion of the crew, tethered to this man’s boat by line that ran from their stern to his bow, were passing the time by sitting in a circle talking and assumingely playing games. This man at his age seemed unconcerned with these things and resided himself to his own boat to be in solitude. I feel that this shot captures the essence in which I experienced him. Tired and weary from his long days, leathered from the sun, slow and long blinks of his eyes, moving slowly around the boat using various props as supports to lean on, taking his time and being relatively unbothered by us being there.

It’s moments like these that slap me in the face with my privilege and luck, being from where I’m from, with the friends and family I have, and doing the things I do. As I’m sitting in this coffee shop writing this, surrounded by iced matcha, vintage clothes, hipsters, and people complaining about how hot it’s been this week in SoCal, I can’t help but feel like I am in another world, so removed from the blue collar life of these Costa Ricans. Both of us being in unimaginable situations from one another. I’m grateful I got to experience this fleeting moment.

Indonesia film 🇮🇩

One of the most eye opening places I’ve been to. Overstimulating at times, devoid of humans at others, endless places to explore, waves so good you can’t understand how they could exist, and overall some of the nicest local people I’ve ever met.

Tester rolls shot on my Canon Rebel in Japan in Spring and Fall of 2023 on Fuji 200 and 400 film.
A lot of mistakes with focus, grain, exposure etc. but was able to still capture an aesthetic of some kind and gain a new perspective and appreciation of one of my favorite places in the world through a camera that I wasn’t sure even worked. taken in 日本 by @cole_atkinson_

Here’s 12 pictures from the past 12 months, 1 for each month starting with January paired with one of my favorite songs of the year. I tried to capture the essence of each month with a single picture, but it was way harder than I imagined. So grateful for all the people and moments in 2024 both in and out of the pictures above, and thanks to @jake_sullivan_ and @getrossco for capturing 2 moments from May and June that I wasn’t able to myself. by @cole_atkinson_
