Week 1 done.
•4 states
•1400 miles.

I started in Oregon; stayed over night in Twin Falls, Idaho; spent the day in Salt Lake City, slept in the Cedar Springs Walmart parking lot, spent a few hours hiking Zion (some of the most beautiful land I’ve ever seen) and then finally drove 500 miles to Phoenix for a few weeks to see family.

All in all here’s what I want to say. I am having one of the best experiences of my life just traveling and talking to people. Visiting places I’ve never been, see worlds and pets of society I’ve never experienced. If you’re asking yourself how I did it, here’s my answer:
“I just wanted to”

I just did it. I didn’t wait until “schools done”, or “I have enough money”. I just left. I wasn’t really prepared, but it’s okay, I’ll figure out as I go.

So if you’re wondering why, the answer is why not. Also yes I’m sleeping out of my car, showering in gyms, and have some stories to tell.

Very few things do I do that I treat with reverence and respect, something that I do and don’t really talk about, but today I got my purple belt in Jiu Jitsu. I’ve been a part of the sport for just over 3 years at this point.

Today really meant a lot to me. I’m thankful for a great team and coach. But the most important person is my greatest influence, my step Dad Joe. He got me into the sport, trained me, and has molded my style into what it is today.

And yeah... old pic on the second one... I still had hair.

I love you. I don’t think that this year that has gotten said enough. It has been a hard year on everybody. Just like you all, someone very close to me died. It has been a very difficult trudge through one of the most perilous years in recent human memory. But we are resilient.

I am the grandson of immigrants and orphans, of those forgotten and persecuted. And we as a generation have grown up together in a world scarred by terrorism and genocide. It is hard to come together through our differences, but it is more than needed, we are stronger together.

So I will say it again, I love you. Because you are human, you are my sister, or brother, and we are the ones who have lived through this tumultuous time. Be thankful not that you have survived, but that you are alive.

I wish you a beautiful, prosperous, and beneficial year. I hope you succeeded where you fear failure, and grow where you thought you were strongest. I hope you meet new people and learn new things. Cherish your family and reconnect with old friends.

During my time taking the Mahayana I would repeat a mantra, I would share it with those who needed it, and even those who wouldn’t ask. It went like this:

It is not the adversity you face, it’s how you undertake it, that defines you.

Shockingly they don’t sell orange ascots at Nordstrom’s anymore. All good, I probably would’ve found a way to choke myself with it. Anyways, Halloween was fun but only because of these people. by @coleo.carter
