On Indigenous Peoples Day we highlight a powerful piece by Jaque Fragua (b.1988 Jemez Pueblo) An important work in neon titled ‘Native Lives Matter’•Taking inspiration from the neon signs at service stations and convenience stores that Jaque saw growing up, this is one in a series of incredible neons he has created. We are very grateful to have been able to exhibit it, see it as a beacon• #colescottwattsgallery #jaquefragua #indiginouspeoplesday taken in Marfa, Texas by @colescottwattsgallery

•Colescott Watts Gallery• is open this week by appointment, please message here to schedule. We highly recommend seeing our exhibition ‘Barbara Rogers:1960’s Works’ with enough time to fully examine each work as their deeper beauty and subtle narratives are discovered through focused looking. In this piece Barbara is exploring work/life balance at a time when she began teaching full time and was concerned about how this would affect her studio practice. *Barbara Rogers ‘Trying Not To Lose My Balance’ 1966 Mixed Media On Paper.

In what Professor Emerita Barbara Rogers calls “amazing and almost miraculous,” her largely unseen 1960s drawings will be unveiled this week, thanks to School of Art student Cooper Colescott and Sam Watts.

Her exhibition marks the first show at the new Colescott Watts Gallery in downtown Tucson. Join them for the opening Friday, Oct. 2, from 4–8 p.m., at 439 N. Sixth Ave., Suite 147.

Cooper (at right in photo) is the youngest son of the late renowned painter Robert Colescott, who helped shape the School of Art’s history as its first Regents Professor. Watts is the grandson of the late acclaimed sculpture artist Sam Richardson.

Discover how Rogers' remarkable connections with both families brought Cooper, Sam and the exhibition together by clicking on our story in the School of Art 🔗, or at https://tinyurl.com/SOArogers26

A last sneak preview of a work from our upcoming exhibition ‘Barbara Rogers: 1960’s Works’ The shadow filled figures in this drawing reappear throughout the works in our exhibition. Rather than working with specificity in her figures, the works of this period have Rogers drawing in a universal visual language. This allows the viewer to author their own interpretations of this joined couple striding across an unknown but familiar landscape. The framing of the works in this exhibition was expertly done by Lewis Framing Studio in Tucson, we are very grateful for their incredible work. The public opening is set for Friday October, 2nd from 4-8pm at Colescott Watts Gallery •439 N. 6th Ave. Number 147 in Tucson•
