Not a New Yorker or a tourist but rather a secret, more mysterious third thing taken in New York City by @colindross

In 1929 Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca moved to New York City to escape from heartbreak and criticism from failed works and to find new inspiration abroad. But he soon discovered that New York was an overwhelming, isolating, and bleak capitalistic driven and exploitative city. There he wrote a series of poems now known as Poet in New York which harshly criticized the city and what it represented.

In 1971 Belgian filmmaker Chantal Akerman moved to New York in hopes of reaching success as a director. While struggling to make ends meet she directed her avant garde film “News from Home” which solely displays b-roll clips of a consistently and increasingly hectic city overlapped with a reading of letters written to her by her mother abroad. The film depicts moments of loneliness, reckoning with the pursuit of following a dream, and trying to adapt in an ever changing world.

What does New York City mean to you? Personally, I’m still trying to figure that out for myself taken in New York City by @colindross
