Yesterday, 8 CUNY students launched a hunger strike to demand that CUNY divest from Israel.
Our university's financial system relies on extracting students and staff labor through tuition and underpaid work - in one of the most expensive cities of the world - to speculate through funds investing in war and genocidal companies.
While many undergrad students are currently disrupting graduation ceremonies of the CUNY schools, the strikers have been relentlessly organizing protests, townhall, assemblies and raising their demands to our president, chancellor and to the board of trustees. A hunger strike is an escalating strategy that happens when no other action has been heard or taken seriously by the authorities. We shouldn't have to get to that point at a public university that claims to be for the People.
While CUNY refuses to divest and to side with its students in fighting the genocide, it's so much of our time and energy that is divested from doing meaningful research with our communities.
Organizing work is care work. As such we often underestimate how physically and mentally exhausting it can be. It is also increasingly dangerous for some. Foreign students are now facing the difficult choice of showing up to the protests at the risk of loosing their visas.
I am as humbled by the determination of my comrades as I am worried for their well-being.
Time for CUNY to show some political courage and care for its students. by @coline.che

This week has been bad in many ways.
CUNY students and instructors have shown up for Mahmoud Khalil, who was abducted by ICE on campus, for no crime and having a green card. Advocating for a free Palestine and against a genocide is becoming an increased risk for students, and Columbia has been at the forefront of the cooperation with the current administration, firing student activists and exposing them to deportation.
While free speech is at risk on our campuses and students are not kept safe by their universities, it is also getting more and more difficult to teach and do research. Everyday we learn about new programs and institutions being shut down.
I am happy to be surrounded by people who do not naturalize cruelty and authoritarianism, who believe in academic freedom, in higher education as a right, and who are ready to get loud about it. by @coline.che

Violence against CEOs has been at the center of the stage in NY these days, but while it has us thinking about corporation greed, it personalizes systemic issues and does not center workers. Amazon workers in NY have consistently been showing the way, forming a union in one of the most anti-union and labor-abusive company around. They are currently on strike - days before Christmas - demanding a contract for the drivers and the recognition of their unionized workers.

Yesterday, we went with a group of PSC CUNY @psc_cuny workers to support the Amazon @amazonlaborunion_local1 picket line in Staten Island. It was the coldest day of the year so far.
The Amazon site is remote from everything, in a corporate park, a swamp landscape structured for trucks and cars, where workers are hidden from everyday life. Yet there is life on the picket line, which requires much organizing and logistics. Signs, food, heaters, but also security allow for the workers to maintain the picket despite the weather and under police surveillance. Union members and organizers are visiting the different picket lines of the city to show solidarity. by @coline.che
