Hayley and I have decided that a great idea for date night would be to do the Kokoda Challenge. So this July, we’ll be spending a romantic evening walking around in the woods.

With that we’re raising money for the Kokoda Youth Foundation in their mission to change the lives of young Australians through instilling the values of the Spirit of Kokoda; Courage, Endurance, Mateship and Sacrifice.

The Kokoda Youth Foundation is an Australian charity that runs free youth programs for kids in the local community, empowering disadvantaged and disengaged youth with the tools to realise their full potential.

Glen Innes a place I once thought of as on the way to Armidale, but after last year’s @goodnessgravel I now know how good the riding is here.

So good in fact I’m going back next weekend! Hopefully I will see you there! The main event is on April 12 and there are three courses on offer: 125km with 1,700m of climbing, 75km with 1,000m and 35km with 450m

At just about 1000m above sea level it is remote and rural, and the course hits everything from mega fast rolling champagne gravel, to rough farm tracks to and some sweeping scenic descents.

Come along, camp at the showground and make a weekend of it in this beautiful part of the NE High Country 🤘

Sound on to hear my life flash before my eyes.

Descending the infamous Enchanted Forest at Apex near Golden, I clipped my bars on that sneaky rock sticking out of the left bank. Fortunately, it just ticked the bar end, but a few mm to the left could have been quite a spectacular crash.

Chatting with some locals, apparently this rock claims folks on the regular.

I gave it a pretty wide berth the next lap 😂

Over the last week, I have dug deep into the @qldparks Draft Plan of Management for Nerang National Park, and it's bad…like really bad.

The Draft Plan identifies mountain bike trails as the primary threat to all ecological and cultural values in the forest and seeks to close about half of the existing trail network. By Parks own admission this is based on “limited” and “inferred” information. This would compress all of the existing user groups into one corner of the forest, but the document does not address replacing the closed trails or how to manage the maintenance load this additional traffic would create.

Worse, this flies in the face of the findings a trail audit QPWS commissioned @dirtart to put together, which not only isn't cited in the draft, Parks has also conveniently removed it from its website. Thankfully, it was picked up by the Wayback machine.

Looking deeper into the report, Parks has misrepresented and taken peer-reviewed studies out of context as evidence for plans opposite in to the authors' findings.

And then there is the fact that Parks has used the cultural heritage of the Kombumerri Traditional Owners as grounds for closing these trails but didn't actually consult with the Kombumerri Traditional Owners - who have since partnered with @gcmtb club on a Provisional Trail Plan.

Shimano’s new GRX 12-speed groupset is in the wild!

A few weeks ago I travelled to Bend, Oregon to spend some time on the new spiny bits out of Japan. It was a fantastic backdrop to put in some time on the new gear and see how Shimano had implemented the extra cog at the back.
