I am pleased to announce a solo exhibition of recent collages. The long curved wall at the Moira Fitzsimmons Aarons Gallery features 50 of my daily warm ups using only scraps (echoes of what’s left from earlier work); the other pieces are from a series that constructs a dialogue with famous Rennaissance portraits and sculptures— echoes of art history. Ghost Index: Object Erasure. 13.4 x 13.4 in plus a little overhang…9.24.26. Cut pieces of magazine and origami papers on book page from Picasso’s Cut Papers book. In this case, the underlying image is a cut flower in the folk craft style of Chinese paper-cut, it’s included in the book because it served as inspiration for Picasso/s forms. Hoping this will be part of a larger wall installation with a few variations that connect up with snippets that transcend borders. Grounding for Fall. 8.5 x 11 in. Carved magazine pages on Met Museum catalogue page. I have given a fragment of a grave relief of a seated woman from 400 BC from the Met’s Greek collection a fall textile makeover. Vehicle 6 & 7. Two new collage explorations of architecture in a bit of a surrealist vein. I am thinking about these constructions as part jalopy, part lumbering giant in forward motion, drawing the viewer into a central vortex. When I lived in Taiwan for my junior year abroad, in 1981/2, I took an Ikebana flower arranging class (and purchased the reference book in Slide 6). Back then, the residue of Japanese occupation of the island was everywhere, including artisans who made tatami mats, purveyors of sashimi, and classes in the Japanese art of flower-arranging. I dug out this old book for collage inspiration. Ikebana is as much about the grace, beauty and harmony of individual stems, as it is about the intentional tension and slippage created by the negative spaces.
