Mostly romance, but really anything I'm reading!

An early #coverlustfriday offering! Tomorrow is going to be pretty busy so I wanted to post while I'm thinking about it lol.

I loved Passion, the first book in this series. I'm about halfway through this one and don't like it quite as much, but Lisa Valdez was definitely one of the trailblazers in terms of bringing kink to historical romance, which I very much appreciate!

I have a bad habit of not reading blurbs and that bit me in the butt because I didn't realize that this is 1) about college students and 2) almost 600 pages. Not that there's anything inherently wrong with either, but I'm at a point in my life where I'm usually just not that into new adult romance and I tend to prefer books under 500 pages.

Please Don't Go deals with some pretty intense stuff. It starts with Josie preparing to jump off a cliff to end her life and Danny being there at just the right moment to stop her. They talk for a bit before she leaves, but he can't stop thinking about her. Naturally, Josie later gets a flat tire and his sister stops to check on her and then calls Danny for help. From this point their lives move closer together, but they both insist on thinking that the other one couldn't possibly love them for the longest time. Danny has his own unaddressed trauma about his younger brother's death that eventually comes to a head.

I don't think this is a bad book, but it wasn't for me. I can see how ten years ago I might've been really gripped by the emotional intensity, but I mostly just kept thinking "wow these two need therapy." I also feel like Danny's obsession with Josie was largely rooted in his desire to save her because he wasn't able to save his brother, and that isn't particularly romantic to me personally.

But of course your mileage may vary and lots of people love this book, which is why I picked it up in the first place. Some things I liked were Danny's tight-knit friend group and the sex scenes, which were quite steamy. And the cover is lovely.

Thanks to Netgalley and Atria Books for the eARC. Please Don't Go is available now.

This was sooooo cute and swoony and is hands down my new favorite book by Janine Amesta! The start to a new series, Love in the Time of Wildfires is about Logan, a grumpy wildland firefighter whose world has mostly shrunk down to his job, and River, an animal behaviorist who's new to town and happens to move in next door to Logan.

She's the sunshine to his grumpy and she handles him so well honestly. He catches her talking to a squirrel like a Disney princess and gets roped into her search for an elusive fox. He also carries her over his shoulder multiple times. And because he has to be away for long stretches of time during wildfire season, we get so many great text exchanges.

I really appreciated that the story takes Logan being a firefighter seriously. It's not just a profession he's given for its sex appeal and to show what a good guy he is. Instead, real thought is given to working conditions, the effects of climate change, and the impact his job has on his relationships. I'm very excited to read what I assume will be future installments about members of his crew finding their own happily ever afters.

The cover is so so lovely, and I've already ordered a physical copy for my collection. Thanks to @janineamesta for the eARC.

Two physical books from the library I finished recently!

Nobody's Baby is the second in a series about a detective named Dorothy Gentleman who lives on a spaceship in the middle of a centuries-long journey during which passengers can have their memories implanted into new bodies once they die. Understandably, reproduction is not permitted on the journey, but one day a baby shows up on a doorstep... This was bite-sized and delightfully queer. I love the cover art - I feel like historically, sci-fi/fantasy covers have been right up there with romance in terms of incredible, over-the-top art, and I want to see more of that.

Excellent Women was written in the 50s and follows Mildred, an unmarried woman in her early 30s whose life mostly revolves around church - until a worldly couple moves in next door and starts to shake things up. This is a quiet novel with lots of social commentary in the vein of Jane Austen, and I really enjoyed it. The ending wasn't what I was expecting but has been sticking with me, and I'm excited to listen to the @reformedrakes episode on it.

It's historical! It's paranormal! It's why choose! It's erotica! All in a lovely bite-sized πŸ˜‰ package!

You're plunged right into the story with this one. Jessica is in a coach that's being robbed by three notorious highwaymen, including Ezra Brody, who steals a kiss along with her valuables... and before she knows it, she's asking him to take her with him. Turns out the other two highwaymen, Tej and Rhys, are equally hot, and all four of them have a few secrets.

I liked the beginning of this better than the end honestly, because the fast pace was great for getting started but then I would've liked more time to get to know all the characters and see them build their connections. But it is a novella, so. In any case, a fun romp that's very steamy and manages to pack in some diversity and social commentary as well.

Thanks to Netgalley and Blue Silver Publishing for the eARC. Seduced by the Werewolf Highwaymen is available now.

The past few weeks I've been struggling to get through ebooks and physical books, so thank goodness for audiobooks which are really carrying me right now. But I'm proud that I've read a bit more diversely this month in terms of genre and that I've been listening to a few audiobooks in Spanish, which is harder for me than reading it with my eyes.

Genre breakdown:

πŸ’« 5 historical romance
πŸ’« 4 contemporary romance
πŸ’« 4 horror
πŸ’« 2 paranormal romance
πŸ’« 1 thriller
πŸ’« 1 literary fiction
πŸ’« 1 historical fiction

Miscellaneous stats:

πŸ’« 14 library loans
πŸ’« 9 new-to-me authors
πŸ’« 2 from my physical TBR
πŸ’« 1 eARC
πŸ’« 1 reread
πŸ’« 1 book club read

Happy #stepbacksaturday! Swipe for the reveal. Art by Pino, 1995.

I love how lush the setting is in this one, and how blissed out the heroine looks. The cover is just as lovely, with a nice metallic sheen. Buying used has its ups and downs... on the one hand, someone cut off one of the back corners. But on the other hand this copy came signed by the author, which is pretty cool! It's been a few years since I read this one, and I may need to revisit soon.

One of my current reads! It's about a multi-generational family spread across Cuba and NYC in the 70s - lots of lush prose, big characters, and a hint of magical realism so far.
