Coffee at sunrise, the excitement of not knowing what the bush has in store. Giraffes looking down at you. Moments with elephants. Sunsets, long baths, bare feet and nowhere else to be.

There’s something about House in the Wild that makes you feel at home. The days slow down, the little things matter, you feel connected to the place and people around you…

The wonderful sounds of life by the river…

At River Cottage, mornings begin with birdsong, the sound of the river flowing past and perhaps a hippo or two getting themselves ready for a long day of sunbathing.

An open-air shower beneath the trees, a slow morning watching the wildlife, and if you fancy it, we’ll set a table on your veranda for a long, leisurely lunch.

The little pleasures of being in the wild.

A beautiful soul, a life that touched so many, and a legacy that will live on in the wild places we all love.

Rest peacefully, Milele. You will never be forgotten🤍

Rest peacefully, Milele. You will never be forgotten. 🤍

Milele was very determined to hunt a baby giraffe, but decide to leave for another day.

Believed to be the oldest male cheetah in the Mara, Milele spent much of his life roaming Enonkishu, Ol Chorro and Lemek.

His life came to an end after an encounter with lions from the Enkuyanai pride.

Milele means “forever” - a fitting name for a cheetah whose legacy will live on. 🤍 by @collectioninthewild

Carved directly into the summit of Kileleoni Hill - the highest peak in the greater Maasai Mara ecosystem - stands Wild Hill. This architectural masterpiece, with its living grass roofs and stone sourced straight from the peak, is far more than a luxury estate- a physical crown of a historic environmental turnaround.

A decade ago, skeptics said this land was too degraded, too intensely farmed, and too empty of wildlife to ever recover.

But founders Tarquin and Lippa Wood partnered with local Maasai landowners to prove them wrong - using an unlikely tool: livestock.

By trading fences for a single, holistically managed cattle herd, they mimicked the ancient, brief grazing patterns of wild herds. The short-grazed grass returned richer, the soil regenerated, and the apex predators followed.

What started as a bean farm is now part of a thriving 45,000-acre fenceless wilderness corridor protected by 700 local families.

A place to feel at home, in the wild.

Set beside the Mara River, House in the Wild has always been a place close to our hearts. A home filled with familiar faces, good food, stories shared around the table and the freedom to make each day your own.

Some days are spent exploring the conservancies, others enjoying long lunches, wandering over to the pool or simply finding a quiet corner to settle into and observe the river.

It's these moments, and the people who make them possible, that give House in the Wild its soul.

We hope it feels a little like home to you, too.

A different way to experience Enonkishu Conservancy: quietly, on horseback, moving at the rhythm of the landscape. Created for experienced and beginner riders who know that the journey matters as much as the destination.

At Enonkishu Conservancy, Maasai landowners, herders, rangers and conservation partners are working towards a landscape that supports wildlife, livestock and livelihoods. Coexistence is never a finished achievement. It is practical work, carried out every day.

From the Mara to the sea.

At Kizingoni, the days take their rhythm from the tide. Barefoot mornings, long lunches in the shade, the light changing over the water, and dinner laid out on the sand as the sun goes.

Same soul of the wild, just a different shoreline.

Impact Spotlight: House in the Wild 🌿

On the edge of the Maasai Mara, House in the Wild is part of a landscape-scale effort to restore what Kenya has been losing: over 70% of its wildlife in the past 40 years. Here, conservation is not a constraint on prosperity, but the foundation of it.

At its heart is Futures in the Wild, the programme that brings conservation, education, and livelihoods together. Land once degraded by deforestation, charcoal, and overgrazing is being restored through regenerative grazing, predator-proof bomas, and fence removal. Across Enonkishu and Mbokishi, 15,094 acres are now protected, and Grant’s gazelles have returned to Mbokishi for the first time in decades. Conservancy fees from guest stays help secure the land and support more than 145 landowner families.

Futures in the Wild reaches into the community, too. At the Women in the Wild tree nursery, indigenous seedlings are tended by hand and at least 120 trees are planted every week in villages, schools, and along riverbanks to prevent erosion, promote biodiversity and provide food and shade. Guests are welcome to join in the planting during their stay.

“We plant trees today because tomorrow our children will need shade, clean air, and a good place to live. If we don’t plant, who will?” - Noonkuta Kimiriny, Esoit village

Its conservation libraries bring education and the next generation into the story. Supported by guest stays, House in the Wild has celebrated its 10th, with the latest holding 1,000 books, solar Wi-Fi, and outdoor lighting.

“Our children now have a place where they can sit, read, and learn about the environment around them. This library will help them understand that taking care of our land and wildlife starts with what we do here at home.” - Gideon Lillianka, teacher, Emarti Comprehensive School

A stay here means being part of the story: wildlife returning, land healing, and a community growing alongside both.

Our story began on land that had been intensively farmed and held very little wildlife.

Its recovery has been a collective effort, shaped by Enonkishu’s landowners, herders, rangers, conservation partners and better ways of managing the land.

The work continues, and so does the learning.

Wild Hill has been named Hotel of the Year at the Tatler Best Africa Awards 2026!

To our team, this is yours. All of it. Thank you for looking after this place the way you do, for all the hundreds of small things a day that nobody sees, but feels.

To our partners, designers @pollospurdon and to the community and the families around us, thank you for trusting us with it, and for everything you’ve taught us about this corner of the Mara.

And to our own family, who’ve been in it from the very start.

We’re one small part of something much bigger out here. Today we feel that more, and are forever grateful!

Thank you @tatler_africa
