We had a beautiful and magical evening with Colleen Coco Collins on Wednesday. After hearing her read and sing, this description of her poetry by Shary Boyle, (another interdisciplinary artist) seems so beautifully apt: ‘Colleen Coco Collins employs vocabulary as a joyful precision tool....her poems vibrate like some kind of ancient rock & roll’.

Below are the opening lines of one of her poems, ‘False Umbels’.

All these peas
  just to see

if I can skirt the fiat
  of inheritance

slough the heritage of loneliness,
 you sorting Lego into bins
  by bad light
 at this late hour.

A runner, a graphing stolon,
I loop the L like you,
expansively;

filigreeing tendrils
I tend and stake,
and list against. taken in The Undercurrent by @colleencococollins

AF is thrilled to present a night with Colleen Coco Collins (Canada)

Colleen Coco Collins (@colleencococollins) [she/they] is an interdisciplinary artist of Irish, French, and Odawa descent, working in songwriting, performance, poetry and visual arts. Her practice oscillates temporality, presumptions of sentience, subversion, rhythm, gesture, frequencies, the ouroboric, the orogenous, the peripatetic, love and the polyglottic. She lives littorally in rural Port Greville, Mi’kma’ki/Nova Scotia, Canada amidst crows, coyotes, grackles, bees, humpback, lichen and fox.

Coco has been making things for many years. She has collaborated as a recording and performing artist with musician Will Kidman, and for bands including Status/Non-Status and Julie Doiron. She’s also played with Jon McKiel, Carson McHone, The Burning Hell, Penny and The Pits, Construction & Destruction, and others. Coco's diverse practise extends to libretti and conceptual visual art, and she has co-created with composer Katharine Petkovski, visual artists Sheilah and Dani ReStack, Claire Greenshaw, and Rita McKeogh; poet Luke Hathaway, musician Zoon, and others. Her work has been shown in galleries across Turtle Island (Can & US), the UK, Eire, and in Australia & NZ/Aotearoa. Her published books include the poetry collections Sorry About The Fire and Radicants (with visual artists Amanda Fauteux and Miranda Bellamy). Coco is currently finishing up her solo album, Vulpes, and recently worked as Writer-in-Residence at UNB Fredericton.

With support from Nranrā: Allana Goldsmith, Rosie Langabeer & Neil Feather

Exploring subtle and complex sounds, the disarming, charming, cardigan wearing westie trio improvises electro-biological music that feels both chaotic and inevitable. Goldsmith’s sounds move effortlessly between melodious phrasing and jagged rupture; Langabeer brings pan/non-tonal keyboard reckonings that flurry and hypnotise; Feather’s approach combines mechanical engineering and gelatinous soundscapes. Together, the capricious trio have an auahatanga entirely their own.

An anonymous sender writes about the unmappable grief of an abuser’s death: the anger, the numbness, the fear of haunting, the relief that cannot be named.

@colleencococollins answers: you are not haunted. No spectre rues your new bloom.

She brings the chickadee, who has other places to go. Shiki on roses- the flowers are easy, the leaves difficult. Basho’s last poem. Diane Seuss on the danger of thinking that our smaller, pain-less selves were better.

Grieve not what was in the heavy sack, but that the sack was heavy.

Basket Weaving - link in bio

This song is a collaborative piece with poet and artist Colleen (Coco) Collins, who is also Odawa. Together we explore the ancestral experience of reconnection. In this instance, to a specific teaching and blood memory; that of the traditional basket weaving process - imagining ourselves on the river bed watching our Ancestors wade into the river to select the right piece of Ash to weave. Here, we question how far we have come as a society and look back in yearning and learning - as we also re-imagine our people gliding through history in Wiigwaas Jimnaan - (Anishinaabe word for Birchbark Canoe).

The accompanying video was illustrated and brought to life by my sweet and wonderful neighbour Shaela Kinting - @mutual.admiration.society with help from @garth.laidlaw by @colleencococollins

‘Unboxing Vid’ is a new video work we made with the brilliant @colleencococollins ! Miranda and I are in Ōtautahi getting ready to share it @cocatoimoroki as part of the group exhibition ‘There is (no) Anthropocene’ alongside @janineranderson and Arielle Walker, @shelleylsimpsonartist , and Virginia Were.

Coco wrote 4 poems for this work, and reads them beautifully in the video, which moves through space and time to the mouth of the Petitcodiac river, within the Sikniktuk district of Mi’kma’ki; the unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq, also known as Albert County, New Brunswick, Canada.

This is where, in 1838, geologist Abraham Gesner commercialised the mining of the bituminous hydrocarbon Albertite, used to produce kerosene through a distillation process that Gesner invented. Today, apples line the roads to the largely forgotten mine site.

Featuring Ceres, Hopewell Rocks, Mastodons, Mud Shrimp, Pandora, and Whales.

The title, ‘Unboxing Vid’, is borrowed from Colleen Coco Collins’ poem, ‘Abscission’.

Thank you Coco! Thank you @strutsgallery !

I’m Alive | a new song by Misha Bower & Colleen Coco Collins
Link in bio

🪽

Architectures abound: of edifice, of community, of song. Of the heart. Of the hand, mid-gesture, laid across an instrument, meandering a passage…

Misha & Coco found their way to this piece thru the architectures of friendship and tenacity. I’m Alive is a collaboration they’ve been scaffolding for a while, passing fragments back and forth between Port Greville, Mi’kma’ki/Nova Scotia and London, Ontario/Deshkan Ziibiing.

please please help (volume 2) is a compilation exploring the architectures of compassion and connection. When imagining the question, “Why should anyone help anyone else?”, one answer might be: Because we’re connected by the shared premise of life. That we are conditioned to forget this - that honouring this fact is not embedded into policies that shape and direct our daily lives - presents a tension between experiencing our shared humanity and an ever-encroaching amnesia of the heart.

Many thanks to Mike Sloane for the invitation to join please please help (vol 2). Deep thanks also to Will Kidman & Simon Larochette for their beautiful work bringing the final version to completion.

my poem Bawaajigan was set movingly to music by @katharine.p ..

Find me in the future:
the hill is steeper,
the dream is deeper.
The water has risen
and is blue.
The way is terraced,
feet are bare,
rushes grasses everywhere.
The people are the throb of
the earth.
Their byre is my
basement.
I am suddenly there too
and then in front
full sun
fully woken into.

Katharine's rendering soars & alights;
glisses in ascendency & stills with gravitas. contains, & runs over (-as i did upon hearing it!).
is moving, beyond.

it is such an honour to work with Katharine,
& to feel the poem's shape be deeply understood,
& to have such stunning new forms breathed into it
..
miigwech, Katharine.
& thank you too to the Vancouver Chamber Choir who performed it, helmed by Kari Turunen.
& merci @biblioasis_books for publishing the poem
..

\\
this text muses the future, and the past,
& where they meet & palimpsest & glitch & frict'..
& they do meet.
there is ever reckoning,
even if rippling across generations.
the great roil of 《time》 touches all..
who is manacled will be manumit.
tho we must heave to speed the churn!!
