Hi!! If you’re new here, thank you so much for the follow.
I thought I’d better step out from behind the easel and introduce myself, even though showing my face on this side of the camera is definitely not my favorite thing to do! I’d much rather be painting. 🎨
I’m Colleen Thompson, a fine art portrait artist based in South Florida (Boca Raton). I specialize in custom pet portraits and oil paintings that capture the special bond between people and their pets.
Whether I’m painting a beloved Golden Retriever, your adorable mix breed, or a custom family portrait, my goal is always to bring that unique personality to life on canvas.
Welcome to my studio! I truly appreciate you being here and following along on this creative journey. 😊

I would love to hear from you…What kind of pet do you have?
Introduce yourself in the comments below!👇

The latest addition to my series “Me and My Golden”. This painting was inspired by the loss of my beloved Roger. 😭

I felt very context and at peace working on this painting. Must be Art Therapy!

My vision is to represents the love and loyalty of your furry companion and find comfort in the bond you have created through the years.

Do you feel the connection between the dog and woman at this early stage of the painting process?

Painting portraits is very much like life. Each layer is like chapters of our seasons, exposing depth and texture that tells the story that only unfolds with time.
So grateful to capture this special bond!

What do you do when one of your dearest friends loses her fur baby?

You give a gift that speaks straight to the heart: a custom painting celebrating a connection that was entirely their own.

Every brushstroke was painted with so much love, aiming to catch the pure happiness they brought each other. Grateful beyond words to be trusted with bringing such a tender memory to life on canvas.

One of my favorite sketchbook tip:
Work side-by-side with the reference photo like this will help train your eye.

I loved playing with the contrast between the cool background and those warm skin tones.

My sketchbook with gessoed paper makes it easy to play with different tonal temperatures without the commitment to a full portrait.

LOVE to practice what I’m learning …what about you? 😊

Had fun playing with this guy!!
Dark backgrounds on portraits really portrays a mood. I love how you can manipulate the light dramatically against the darkness dark.

My sketchbook studies are precious nuggets where I learn the most because I’m painting for me😊

Hope you’re doing something you love this Sunday!

My favorite way to paint portraits—especially sweet little ones—is starting entirely in black, white and gray aka Grisaille.
Mapping out the light and shadows first makes layering on those soft skin tones so much easier.
There’s nothing quite like watching the color bring her to life! What do you think?

The Storie behind the Face…
The challenge: paint aging skin with the kind of lines that carry a whole lifetime.

More than a study in shadows and texture, this was about capturing the emotion and wisdom. There is quite power and beauty in aging. Look closely, did I capture that feeling?

Hey, send me a ❤️ if you want to see more of my sketchbook oil portraits😊
