VOLS MAKE IT ONE FOR THE THUMB. On October 23, 1999. Tennessee traveled to Alabama to renew one of College Football's great Rivalries. Both teams had rebounded from early losses to be among the top teams in America. Tennessee had climbed back up to 5th after their September loss to Florida and had reignited hopes of a 2nd straight National Championship. Alabama had rebounded from an inexplicable loss to Louisiana Tech to climb up to 10th. The Tide featured Heisman hopeful Shaun Alexander at RB while Alabama native Tee Martin was at the control for the Volunteers, who were aiming for a 5th straight win in the series. One other major note about the game was where it was being played. For the 1st time since 1930, the game was being played on Alabama's campus in Tuscaloosa(Bama had for many years played its major designated home games in Birmingham). The game was an old school battle that Neyland and Bryant would both appreciate. After a scoreless 1st Quarter, the Tide opened the scoring in the 2nd when Alexander caught a pass from QB Andrew Zow. Tennessee would answer on a Martin TD Run. Martin hurt his hamstring during the game but it wasn't about to stop his homecoming. In the 3rd Quarter, Martin hit WR David Martin on a deep Pass TD to give Tennessee a 14-7 lead. Defense and Special Teams ruled the day for the Big Orange. Martin's 2nd Rushing TD sealed the deal in the 4th. 21-7 Tennessee. 5 in a row over the hated Tide, a game that all but ended Alexander's Heisman hopes. The Cigars once again had an Orange scent. Sean McDonough, Todd Blackledge and Michelle Tafoya on the call for CBS. by @collegesportsclassics

CLASSIC SOUTHWEST STYLE SHOOTOUT LEAVES DEFENSES SEEING GHOSTS ON HALLOWEEN. On October 31, 2015, 12th Ranked Oklahoma State traveled to Texas Tech for a critical Big 12 encounter. When you think of these 2 teams, you usually think Offense and there would be plenty of it on this day. No need for a full summary. Just enjoy a game that had a combined 123 Points and 1,304 Yards of Offense! Enjoy every TD from this encounter. Future pros on display include @rudolph2mason and @jameswashington13 for Oklahoma State. Oh yeah. There's this cat named Mahomes playing QB for Texas Tech. MIRACLE ON THE MOUNTAIN, SUDDEN TURN OF EVENTS SETS OFF PARTY IN BOONE. This is a lengthy post as far as number of slides. But it's worth it to go through them all. On October 12, 2002, Furman and Appalachian State renewed their hotly contested Southern Conference Rivalry in front of a jam packed crowd at Kidd-Brewer Stadium in Boone. The defenses were cooking until the last 6 minutes, App State took the lead on a Touchdown Pass from Joe Burchette to Joey Hoover. Furman then went on a time consuming drive to took them down near the goalline. After 2 Delay Of Game Penalties. QB Billy Napier(Yes, That Billy Napier) fired a bullet to Bear Rinehart with 7 seconds left to give Furman a 15-14 lead, then, the unthinkable happened. Instead of kicking the PAT, Coach Bobby Lamb opted to go for 2 to make it a 3 Point Furman lead. To say it backfired is the biggest understatement imaginable. Disaster hit when Napier's pass was Intercepted by Josh Jefferies, sensing a shot at unthinkable glory. Jefferies pitched the ball to Derrick Black, who ran the final 84 yards uncontested for 2 points and an improbable Appalachian lead. App State would recover the onside kick and clinch one of the wildest wins in College Football History. A day that will live in lore in Boone. @bobrathbuntv, Ethan Horton and Paul Crane on the call for FSN South. by @collegesportsclassics

GATORS SPOIL AGGIES SEC DEBUT, BOTH TEAMS SHOW SIGNS OF THINGS TO COME. On September 8, 2012, The Florida Gators were the special guests for a historic moment at Kyle Field. The 1st SEC Game for Texas A&M was played in front of a packed house at the scorching, sun drenched home of the Aggies. The 12th Man was ready, the game was a typical SEC knock down drag out affair. Mike Gillislee gave the Gators a 7-3 lead, A&M didn't back down, led by a young freshman QB the rest of the CFB World would soon get to know, Johnny Manziel. Manziel would score on an 11 yard Run to put A&M in front in the 2nd. RB Christine Michael would score a few minutes later to make it 17-7. But the Gators stymied the Aggies from there on out. QB Jeff Driskel showed that he wasn't the only QB to make plays with his feet. Gillislee's 2nd TD early in the 4th made it 20-17. Good Defense and timely 1st downs helped Florida play the role of party pooper on A&M's big day. The Gators would prove to be road warriors, following this performance with wins at Tennessee and Florida State en route to an 11-2 season and a Sugar Bowl berth. While Manziel showed flashes of the star he would soon become. The Aggies would stun Alabama in November, thrash Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl and finish 5th in the Final Poll. Oh yeah. Johnny Football would go on to win the Heisman Trophy. Brent Musburger, @kirkherbstreit and Heather Cox on the call for ESPN. by @collegesportsclassics

CRAZIEST HOLY WAR FINISH EVER? The Holy War between BYU and Utah is truly one of College Football's special Rivalries. A Rivalry filled with many crazy finishes and wild moments over its history. But the events of September 15, 2012 may have just been the nuttiest of them all. The Utes led the 25th Ranked Cougars by 10 in the 4th when BYU scored on a short Touchdown. The Defense then held and gave the Offense a chance. But a good Utah Punt pinned the Cougars deep in their own territory, with no Timeouts, the situation looked bleak, with less than 30 seconds left, BYU had 4th and ball game, That's when QB Riley Nelson launched a prayer down the right sideline to Cody Hoffman, who somehow got behind the Utah defense for a gain of 40. With 8 seconds left, Nelson threw a pass that fell incomplete. Time ran out, the game was over. Or was it? As Utah fans stormed the field, the celebration was cut short when the officials took another look, video replay confirmed there was still 1 second left. The fans got cleared off the field and BYU K Justin Sorensen had a 51 Yard FG to force OT. The kick was blocked. Game Over this time.... OH NO IT WASN'T. Quick thinking by a BYU player had him pick up the ball and run, The Utah bench cleared and the fans rushed the field for a 2nd time. But a flag flew, after a few minutes, a live ball foul was called. 15 yard Penalty, untimed down. AGAIN the fans had to be whisked away. AGAIN BYU still had a pulse. Riley Stephenson would come in and have a 36 yarder this time. But the kick bounced off the left upright. No Good. No Flags. FINALLY, Utah fans could celebrate a victory over their hated Rivals. The field was rushed for a 3rd time and the party was on. Even by Holy War standards, this finish defied all logic and reason. FRIARS MAKE HISTORY, LEAVE FATE OUT OF COMMITTEE'S HANDS. In March 1994, the Big East Tournament was held at Madison Square Garden. The Providence Friars came into the Tournament squarely on the NCAA Tournament Bubble. In 1993, Providence thought they had done enough to get a bid but were left out. Rick Barnes' Team wasn't going to let it happen again. In the Quarterfinals, they beat Villanova 77-66 in a loser leave town game for the Tournament. Then in the Semifinals, they stunned top Seeded UConn 69-67, that was probably enough, but for good measure, they beat Georgetown 74-64 in the Championship to win the school's 1st Big East Tournament Title. Quite a 3 days for the Friars! by @collegesportsclassics

VOLS SURVIVE SCARE FROM PESKY WILDCATS. On November 18, 1995. 4th ranked Tennessee traveled to Kentucky as a near 4 Touchdown favorite against the 4-6 Wildcats. But Kentucky put in a herculean effort for embattled coach Bill Curry, Leading 24-9 in the 3rd Quarter. The Volunteers then decided to wake up. @peytonmanning scored on a sneak from a yard out, then on the next UT possession, hit @joeykent11 for a deep TD and the lead, surely the UK dream was over right? WRONG! On the 1st play of the 4th Quarter, Wildcat QB Billy Jack Haskins somehow eluded Vols while also bouncing off of them. Kentucky back to the lead, But Manning drove Tennessee back down the field and hit Greg Kyler for the lead. Kentucky lined up for a game tying FG with about 5 minutes left, but Tennessee blocked it, then ran out the clock and escaped the Bluegrass with a 34-31 win. Their 11th straight over Kentucky. @timmybonfox, James Lofton and Bob Kesling on the call for Jefferson-Pilot Sports. by @collegesportsclassics

CARDIAC BULLDOGS LEAVE TIGERS STUNNED. On October 9, 1999. 5-0 Mississippi State traveled to Auburn looking to continue their hot start to the season. The Tigers and 1st year coach Tommy Tuberville weren't interested. Leading 16-3 with less than 5 minutes left, but in what would be a sign of things to come in 99 for Jackie Sherrill's Bulldogs, they simply wouldn't go away. After starting QB Wayne Madkin got hurt, Matt Wyatt(@radiowyatt) came in. With 2:28 left, Wyatt hit C.J. Sirmones for a 16 yard TD. Auburn couldn't run out the clock and took a safety with less than a minute left to make the score 16-12. State got a good return and then drove to the 11. On 1st down, Wyatt threw the ball away, on 2nd down, he had a man in the Endzone who fell down. 3rd down, 19 seconds. Wyatt threaded the needle to Matt Butler, who hauled the winning score in. Mississippi State picked off an Auburn pass to officially seal an 18-16 win that defied logic. But that didn't matter to the 1999 Mississippi State Bulldogs. Who simply refused to lose. @davenealsports and Dave Rowe on the call for Jefferson-Pilot Sports. by @collegesportsclassics
