I am keeping myself occupied with things during a tired period ... making supplies for when I have more energy. I have been trying to combine my interests as well ... this time, concertinas and gel printing. This was a fun way to keep moving forward. Substrates for later and some special ones to keep.

I took the @estrellita.caracol Domestika class “Illustrated Characters with Paper” and was inspired to make texture paper and make characters from it. This was me exploring doing it with the gel plate. I even found some characters hiding in the paint ... and a shoe that I have not extracted yet. The circular pieces are the extras from a Tub Shroom. #goldenopenacrylics by @colorific

Amazon switched from plastic to paper bags. I believe paper bags should become zines. I have not had a use for them for a while, but I keep getting ads for concertina classes. I am intrigued by the format ... combining different pages and different numbers of pages depending on how you open it. I tried different formats using @wuthipol.designs videos (the folding samples in the grid), but the basic concertina fits my needs the best. Fun to try though! Are you a zine maker? For note taking, stories, instructions, mini art books, ...? by @colorific

I was asked about my process for creating the bear ...
I like scraping paint and creating texture. I have been trying to integrate my practices. This was the first test with combining paint scraping (Posts: March 21, 27 2022 ), evolving an image from marks (imagination, creativity, David Friend book, Posts: July 27 and August 2, 2023), and character creation (more later). This bear is just a character rough (starter idea) that I can develop several characters from. He is about 2.5” square.
1. Homemade stay wet palette to load key card used for scraping paint. Piece of deli paper used to monoprint the black “grunge” over the top. Watch Dan Tirels on YouTube.
2. This was part of a 3x3 grid that was taped off with removable transparent tape. As you can see, I was not trying to paint a bear. It’s just paint marks.
3. After the tape was removed, I stared at it until I could see what was the minimum that I could do to make the bear visible without destroying the spontaneity and character of the image. I made a few tiny marks at a time with Posca Pens ... don’t want to scare the bear! 🤭
4. The final “sketch”. He could become more ... a fully defined and further resolved character; several versions worked up in a variety of media; and ... always ... just be awesome as he is.
I’m leaning into things that I enjoy and figuring out how to combine them. It’s worth doing. I hope you do the same. Be excited about who you are. 🤗

Every year around this time I check in with myself to figure out how I want to keep track of my life, mark the days and make my tools fit who I want to be. Just me? I have done Bullet Journaling (BuJo) for years. This is me defining my 2025 version. December is my transition month. Is it really almost December?! Still pondering how much color, stamping and collage. PaperMate Flair. CVS Caliber composition book … best paper.

Thank you to all of you who used the link to support this family. I just wanted to put an update out. I hope you hug your kiddos and tell them that you love them. I also hope that you talk to them about mistreating others, and ask them if they are being mistreated at school. The word bullying is too big and confusing. Just ask them about how they’re being treated. My philosophy is … If you know how it feels, refuse to do it to someone else. I also advocate speaking up for and protecting yourself and others in your presence. It usually doesn’t take much. We have to make bad behavior unacceptable. Love to you all.
