Somewhere between rescue post and moon base.

A fragment of coastal optimism from an age that believed the future could be designed - while the ferry slips through, carrying the present with it.

A monument to a new beginning.

Notre-Dame de Royan, begun in 1955 by Guillaume Gillet, rises from reinforced concrete - severe, vertical and unmistakably modern.

A future meant to be lived in.

Royan was rebuilt around the idea of beginning again - and somehow, everyday life still carries a trace of that promise

Built for the sun.

Its stepped silhouette opens the building to terraces, air and changing views - a vertical way of living attuned to the coast.

A little orbit above the Atlantic.

A circle above, a horizon below - even the smallest architectural detail seems to echo the sea.

Drawn like a wave.

Here, modernism bends with the coastline - less monument, more movement.

Music for the eyes.

Arriving by ferry from the wide Atlantic beaches — lined with wooden cabins and Belle Époque bathing houses — this burst of colour feels almost Floridian, setting the tone for a city shaped by lightness, leisure and seaside joy.

A pause from the future.

Royan’s 50s modernism sometimes feels less like architecture than a vision of tomorrow - rounded, weightless, almost extraterrestrial.

Summer written in lines.

Balconies, shutters and striped awnings turn Royan’s post-war architecture into a rhythm of colour and white space.

Modernism shaped by memory.

After the destruction of 1945, Brazilian modernism shaped a new Royan - open, sculptural and unmistakably of its time.
