Sometimes, I have to remind myself that being a children’s author means remembering how to be a kid!

My girl @trippin.along invited me to a content creator event that @barbie was putting on. Listen, your girl was out here colouring and taking pictures like she was in primary school again 😂

I had so much fun stepping into my inner child at this pop-up at Yorkdale!

It reminded me of the days that I wished I could find a Black Barbie ANYWHERE. It was so heartbreaking..Truthfully, the event was also great reminder of the progress that @barbie has made.

As a children’s author, I believe it’s important to tap into that innocence and remember what life was like in its simplicity,not only to remember what made us excited as kids, but to create stories, characters and experiences that children can truly see themselves in and connect with.

Because sometimes, the best way to understand a child’s world is to revisit your own. 💕

Thank you Dene @trippin.along for inviting me and @barbie for creating such a thoughtful pop-op.

Next time, it would be great if you could make some refreshments please. It would’ve added that special touch.😉

S/O to the vendors and the mindful thought-provoking discussions by our panellists.

As a children’s author, I have always believed that books are more than words and pictures on a page. Stories have the power to help children discover who they are, in understand the world around them, and, most importantly, believe in who they can become.

My work within our schools and communities has given me the privilege of meeting thousands of young people. And every time I walk into a classroom, I am reminded of why representation matters, especially amongst our young Black children

I want them to see that a Black woman can be an author, an educator, a speaker, an entrepreneur, a leader, and a positive force within her community.

I want them to understand that their circumstances do not have to define the size of their dreams.

When a child sees positive representation in a book, in their classroom, or standing at the front of a room, it sends a powerful message: “Someone like me can do this too.”

That is the message I hope my work continues to deliver.

To the young people I meet: never be afraid to dream beyond what you see around you. Your voice matters. Your imagination matters. Your story matters.

This award is a beautiful reminder that the work we do matters. Though I also see it as a responsibility to keep writing, keep showing up, keep opening doors, and keep creating opportunities for the next generation.

I’m still in recovery mode. This weekend truly paid a toll on my body.

What an electrifying celebration of our people, our culture, our music, our food, and our incredible Caribbean spirit! 🇹🇹✨

A huge THANK YOU to every new customer, family, friend, and returning customer who came out to support us and our sister company, Colourful Drinks.

Sharing traditional favourites like sorrel, mauby, and soursop juice with the community and hearing such amazing feedback meant more than you know!

Being selected as one of the Top 100 Black Women in Canada to Watch for 2026 by @cibwe.ca is an honour.

When I reflect on the journey, I’m reminded that purpose often grows from the experiences that challenge us most.

What began as a desire to help children navigate difficult conversations has grown into a mission to serve my community through literacy, representation, and meaningful stories.

Through my company @colourtheirworld, I’ve been fortunate to have the opportunity to create literature that allows children to see themselves reflected on the pages while also inviting children from all ethnic backgrounds and cultures to learn, connect, and celebrate one another.

This recognition is not just a reflection of where I am because it’s a reminder to me of why I started and who I’m called to serve. Thank you Lord.

I’m incredibly grateful for everyone who has supported this journey and excited to celebrate this incredible honour at the gala in October! 🥂✨

Here’s to continuing to create, inspire, educate, and make an impact for that one child and one story at a time.
