Grief can be so deeply complex. Earlier this week, we lost my grandfather; a man who was present when I was born, but who I did not know through most of my young life. I don’t have a lifetime of memories with him, yet I grieve what those may have been like. I mourn the time we cannot reclaim, just as I mourn that our time together became altogether too few and too brief.

And yet, I am grateful that we were given any time in this life at all. To see you, and to see my father together in person, was to finally know you and to fill a piece that was missing. To wrap my arms around you and to say “I love you, grandpa,” for the first time in 32 years of my life was a cathartic release and resolution that I’d not known was needed. While we weren’t always present, you knew us all by name and loved us deeply - reminding us how fondly you remember coming by train (as we both share a fear of flying) to visit when I was born.

Two things can be true: I grew up with an amazing grandfather who knew and loved me, and I loved him - that love will never change. And, at the same time, I got to discover and love a man who was my grandfather by blood; a man I now mourn what time was not able to similarly offer with the other. Both are my grandfathers, but mourning looks a little different for each.

One, I have a lifetime of love and memories; one, I mourn a lifetime that could have been. Yet, I cherish time with both deeply. Whatever awaits beyond this lifetime, grandpa Benton, I hope we are able to make up what time did not allow us to in this life.

This little guy is six years old today! I will never tire of saying that a rescue dog is one of the best gifts that this life has to offer; not because I rescued him, but because he rescued me. Harvey came into my life at a dark time - freshly off an election loss at the height of COVID isolation (Dec 2020). He helped get me back into routine and gave me a feeling of purpose and value again. He quickly snuck into the heart of my partner and has enriched our lives every single day with his personality, his little quirks, and the abundance of love he bestows on our household! Harvey isn’t just a dog, he is what completes our household - he is an indelible part of our family, much like a child, and I’m so grateful to be his dog dad in this life. There will never be enough words to convey the pride and joy that brings me. Happy Birthday, Harvey Milk! 🏳️‍🌈🎂🎉

This week on Out of the Rut, X sat down with Colton Myers to talk about politics. Colton goes into where his political interests began, the highs and lows of running for state representative during a pandemic, and how one tragic event sparked a deep seated passion to connect with his community. Politics can feel overwhelming, divisive, or completely out of reach, but real change starts with real people willing to step up.

There are (gay) icons, there are legends - and then there is Kylie Minogue @kylieminogue . I’ve waited so many years for her to tour stateside again and she was well worth the wait: I sang, I screamed, I cried, and I danced the night away nonstop; it was everything I needed to commence a really challenging week…month…YEAR! Thank you, Kylie, for always loving our community, and encouraging us to live and love authentically! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜 #TensionTour💎🪩

PS. Even though he’s a country boy at heart, thank you babe (@robert.alexander250 ) for indulging me and allowing me to dance like no one was watching! 🕺

Year 2 making the new annual holiday tradition: @gewhitmer @whitmermi aka Big Gretch’s baked oatmeal for the family! She’s an icon, she’s a legend, and she IS the moment…and, hopefully our next President in 2028 (manifesting to get through these next four years mentally 🫠).

I consider myself the luckiest man to have a partner who supports me on my lowest days (which have been many over the last month), builds me up when I feel down on myself, makes me laugh and smile infectiously, and loves me for everything that I am. With so much uncertainly in the World, you are the constant that makes me believe we can overcome anything together. You are the best partner, and dog dad, anyone could ask for. Happy 2nd Anniversary @robert.alexander250 ! You are the Nick to my Charlie - I love you so much and am grateful every day that you chose me to be on this journey of life with you! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

That’s Kraken hockey, baby! We may not have gotten a win, but it was an incredible night with our amazing friends! I cannot say THANK YOU enough to @madddiekate for upgrading our seats to quite literally the closest I’ve sat for any major sport - it was a night to remember (I still cannot believe I was so close to @yannigourde18 and @brandontanev 😭💙) 😍🦑🏒
