We are SO excited to introduce our next freshman, Vienna Farano from Menlo Park, California! šŸ»šŸŒ…šŸŽ‰ Vienna is joining us after 4 years at @norcal.crew , and she’s bringing some serious taste with her. She’s a Cheesecake Factory regular and has been known to ā€œcelebrate her birthdayā€ there more than once a year šŸŽ‚šŸ˜‰. Her snack of choice? A charcuterie board, obviously šŸ§€šŸ‡. Before rowing, Vienna was a standout on the soccer field, but she traded her cleats for an oar, and we couldn’t be happier she did šŸš£ā€ā™€ļøāš½. Welcome to CBWR, Vienna!!!!!! šŸš£šŸš£ā€ā™€ļøšŸš£ā€ā™‚ļøšŸ’™ by @columbiawrowing

We are SO excited to introduce our next freshman, Laura Kim from Port Washington, New York! šŸŽ‰ Laura rowed for @deerfieldgirlsrowing , and her rowing story starts with a plot twist: she was one of just two cuts from her high school squash team. A BIG WIN FOR CBWR šŸ™Œ. That twist sent her straight to the boathouse, and she’s been crushing it ever since šŸš£ā€ā™€ļøāœØ. Before rowing she was also a diver, but she’ll happily trade the high dive for the Harlem River any day (scared of heights), and we are THRILLED to have her on the water with us. One of her biggest fear? Porta-potties 😱. Welcome to CBWR, Laura! šŸ’™šŸŽŠšŸŽŠ by @columbiawrowing

Next up in our freshman shoutouts is the one and ONLY Fendley Obert from Dallas, Texas! 🤠 Fendley rowed for @hockaday_rowing and is joining the Hamilton fan club, because she ALSO knows every word to every song. Natalie, you officially have a duet partner for Academy bus karaoke. When she’s not singing, you can find her snacking on blueberries and running the table at mahjong šŸ€„šŸ«. She’s also a big Strava fan, so get ready to trade some kudos. Fendley wears her flip flops EVERYWHERE, so we can’t wait to see them take on the NYC sidewalks in January. One thing she can’t do yet? Touch her toes. Don’t worry, Fendley, a few weeks of team dynamics and you’ll get there. Welcome to CBWR, Fendley!!!! šŸ«šŸ’–šŸ˜‡šŸ«¶ by @columbiawrowing

First up in our freshman intros is Natalie Cory-Wright, coming to us all the way from London! šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§ Natalie rowed for @spgsbc , but before she found the boat, she was a swimmer, a lacrosse player, a basketball player AND a netball player (Google it, Americans). She quit all four the second she started rowing, so we know where her loyalties lie. Before London, she spent 8 years living in Qatar, and she has memorized the ENTIRE Hamilton soundtrack, so get ready for some very passionate Academy bus karaoke. Luckily for her, Broadway is just a ride down the 1 train. Welcome to CBWR, Natalie, we are so happy to have you! šŸ«¶šŸ˜šŸ’– by @columbiawrowing

AND FINALLY we have one of our incredible captains: Jackie Zatsiorsky aka JZ šŸ’–ā˜ŗļøšŸ«¶šŸ„¹šŸŒŸšŸ§‘ā€āœˆļø

Jackie, putting the impact you’ve had on this team into words is difficult, but I will do my best.

Early into my freshman year, Sam told me that, as a shorter rower, I could learn a lot from Jackie on how to improve my stroke and that I should ask her for advice. And while the cliché would be to say that I was terrified to approach her or had no idea what to expect, the truth is that I already knew she would welcome me with open arms. Jackie has always carried herself with this incredible balance of being an absolute powerhouse port while also handling everything else in her life with so much poise. I mean, comp bio on the pre-med track and basically running the CBWR PhotoCircle? Insane.

Being in the pair with you was truly one of the best rows of my life (#u30trialsincoming), and I’ve always loved getting in extra meters with you but what I’ll carry with me most is everything you showed me outside of rowing, too. You’ve taught me to apply myself fully in everything I pursue, and, as the biggest supporter of my many questions, you’ve inspired me to stay curious and open-minded.Ā

You truly embody everything that CBWR stands for, and you always know what to say. When everything seems to be going wrong, you are a constant source of calm and reassurance for everyone around you. I don’t know what CBWR will do without your bubbly laugh, curly bun, and TSOL attitude, but I know that your influence on the team will stick with all of us for a long time.

I am honored to be called your mini-me, and I could only hope to replicate an ounce of your determination and compassion. I will miss hearing your laugh and DMing international DJs together (shoutout Swimming Paul), but I am so excited to complete our Hyrox together and cannot wait to visit you in Boston next year. There is nobody else I’d want to eat frog legs and run to the bottom of Manhattan with. I know you’re gonna thrive at MIT, and I cannot wait to see your comp bio journey evolve. Stay curious. I’ll keep chirping for you.

Our next senior shoutout goes to the one and only, the OARMONSTER, Olivia McManus!!! 😁🫶 !!!!!! šŸ’…šŸ’…šŸ’–šŸ’–šŸ˜›šŸ˜›šŸ˜šŸ˜

Dear Olivia,
Where to even start with Olivia. I think it’s appropriate to start with the fact that I was recruited because of liv. During my recruitment, I was talking to sam she said there is this one girl on the team that reminded her exactly of me, and because of her success and leadership to the team, she decided to invest in me. Because of livs impressionable character sam decided to take a shot on someone just like her. Fast forward to my freshman year I was initially intimidated by liv’s undenaible loyalty, fierceness and generosity but during the summer after freshman year her family coincidentally rented the house behind mine and our relationship changed forever. When my life got liv, it was getting emotional support through every up and down, someone who pushes the people she loves and someone who understands all perspectives and never passes judgement. As a friend, I felt like I finally had a place on this team and that is representative of what she does, she cultivates and motivates her friends and is a true rock. As a teammate, Liv has shown up to every erg and every boat by putting her all on the line every single time, evident in her seat races, success in all boat classes and many PRs. Liv gives feedback (whether prompted or not) and makes any position she’s in better by being in it and pushing it to always improve. My favorite memory will forever be rowing in the Charles and I will never forget that moment. When she is in front of me, she becomes my reason to push. For me, she is the reason why I fell in love with rowing and this team. She has been in the single alone doing speed order while working full time, she has been put in positions where her speed is not tested, put in all boat classes, excluded from some and thriving in others. She represents the rawness this sport is, and the relatability I needed in my life and her resilience and willingness to put all she has when it is hard and gritty and not going her way. She is truly an example I think everyone should look up to.

Our next Class of 2026 shoutout goes to SEAS princess āš™ļøšŸ„¼Andrea Vergara from Lima, Peru. We wish she could stay one more year, but we’ll be cheering for her as she completes her ME in Materials Science and 5th year at Duke!
Te quiero mucho y te voy a extrañar terriblemente.

After a brief hiatus, we are back with our next Class of 2026 senior, the one and only Boss, Emily Bukowski.
People tell me that Emily and I look alike. I can think of no better compliment, because I can think of no one I would rather be like. This year, I injured myself during the fall and couldn’t row. I was crushed until Emily Bukowski told me that I would be fine, because I was a hard worker, and she knew I’d bounce back in no time. This vote of confidence meant a great deal to me, especially given who it came from. Buki is the most motivated teammate I have ever known, and her own idea that I share even a fraction of this amazing quality of hers is something that has stayed with me since.
However, if there is one thing I have learned during my time at Columbia, it is that the only thing better than a Buki complement is a Buki call-out. While I love all the fist bumps and the Kudos
on the bus and the ā€œyou’ve got thisā€s, they don’t compare to the side eyes and the ā€œDowd you can do betterā€s. If anybody else had something to say about me missing a few extra workouts in Dodge, or about the fact that I didn’t bring the right shoes and was doing the morning run in my Boston’s, or that I wasn’t excited to piece, I wouldn’t care.
However, when Buki calls me out for these things, I could not be more attentive to what she has to say. This is because I know of no one as bought in; mind, body, and soul, as Emily Bukowski. More importantly, though, I think, Emily calls people out not because she thinks they aren’t good enough, but because she thinks they are capable of more. Yes, Buki is kind, and smart, and funny, and the most dedicated human being I have ever met–not just to rowing but to all the things she cares
about. However, Emily’s best trait (in my opinion) is her relentless faith in people that they can become the best versions of themselves, and that this transformation is something they actually deserve. The confidence Emily has had in me these past two years has given me belief in myself I never
thought I’d find, and it is something I will carry with me for the rest of my life. I love you Buki, and I am going to miss you very much.

Our next senior shoutout goes to Addie Luce, CBWR’s resident cookie chef šŸŖ, Anthropologie fashion icon, and soon to be famous comedy short story author #writefunny

What I found to be the best representation of how I feel about my friendship with Addie is best achieved by comparing it to something she knows especially well: a game of cards. To win any game of cards, you need a combination of three things: being dealt a good hand, knowing the value of what you’ve been given, and have a plan to make the most of it. I was dealt an unbelievably good hand when Addie came into my life. So good, honestly, that to me it’s not even worth winning the game if it means I have to give it up.
When you’re lucky enough to hold something this rare, you stop playing to win. You start playing just to keep it.

I remember the first time I met Addie: at a boathouse practice around two years ago where she was being given a tour before coming to school that fall. She stood there so timidly, swallowed by her oversized puffer coat, looking like she had no idea what was ahead of her. And I had no idea either that standing in front of me wasn’t just another teammate, or even just another friend. I was looking at the winning hand. The card you spend an entire game hoping gets dealt to you, and if you’re lucky enough to get it, you hold onto for as long as you possibly can.

My friendship with Addie has taught me that sometimes the best cards to have aren’t the aces or the kings…sometimes they’re the two jokers. Somewhere in between the Jay breakfasts, reading me your writing, and late-night conversations, I realized I found something extremely hard to come by: I finally found my matching pair.

Our next senior shoutout goes to the very organized, very special, very missed, Ria Raheja (Mary Poppins šŸ‘œ) from Atlanta, GA.

My dearest Ria,
My fondest memories with you start not so long ago, the winter training trip, where you not
only beat me in your first ever Catan game, but also where you got me hooked to Poppi’s
and now, I can’t go a day without one.
As the season progressed, we began to spend a lot of time together and this time face to
face. It was a joy to see you every day with the biggest smile on your face, of course, only
after your morning coffee, and your ginormous bag that would quite literally have everything
someone may need. Jokes aside, Ria you were the coxin that took me down my first college
race and my first win and for that I am forever grateful for. Your perceptive and skilled eye
knew how to read me and the boat to make us the fastest we could be.
I know we didn’t finish the season in the same boat, but I want you to know that I carried
the fire you lit within me during every race.
Thank you for believing in me, pushing me, and reminding me to trust myself even when I
doubted it through your encouraging words and your calming intentional presence, when I
am totally crashing out because I am stuck between the ergs in the trailer.
Ria, you will forever be the elite rowing team mom with the kindest heart and sweetest soul.
You have this incredible way of making everyone around you feel seen, supported, and cared for.
I am going to miss hearing your voice at practice, your laugh, our little conversations about
coffee and EmergenC, and honestly just knowing you’re around. I have no doubt in my mind
that wherever life takes you, you are going to continue making people feel the same warmth
and inspiration that you brought to CBWR.
I love you endlessly and I am so lucky rowing brought us together.

Next up in our Class of 2026 shoutouts is the irreplaceable, Strava dedicated speed demon, team captain Bryn Dittrich from Wilton, NY. Bryn is working in finance at Uber šŸš˜šŸ¦, so hopefully she will use her employee discount to visit us.

Bryn, my first impression of you was that you definitely were one of those insane people who secretly lived in Dodge and worked out 24/7 and never complained about any of it because you enjoyed the work that it took to get the results. You have been such a wonderful leader to the entire team, and from your freshman year, you have seen this team grow with you in ways that our coaches and alumni never thought to be possible. You are a veteran of this team, and I feel as though everything you do, you do thanklessly; you have an endless heart, and always have a grounding presence that other people can feel safe to lean on. I feel like every time I see you, you’re always so dialed in and focused, ready for the next move, piece, and the occasional 30K row, which honestly, you probably already do on the RP3 in dodge every morning anyway. You will be missed so much by this team, whose history you have played such a large part in, and, on behalf of CBWR, thank you for all that you have pushed us to do and for always being the one to take the first step in setting higher standards and goals for this team. I hope that as I continue on in my time here at Columbia, this team, including myself, will make you proud as we continue to set the bar higher, as you have always done for us.Ā Ā
