It’s funny how certain dates stick with you.
Columbus Day, 2014, was right around the time I started seriously thinking about building a real estate company. A few weeks later, in November, Columbus & Over Group was officially formed.

At the time, I was living on the edge of Columbus Avenue, looking out over the dividing line between Boston’s #SouthEnd and #BackBay. So much of my life revolved around those two neighborhoods, wandering back and forth, getting to know the buildings, the streets, the people, and the stories behind them.
That’s where the name came from. The Columbus Day timing may have been a coincidence, but the avenue itself certainly wasn’t.
From the beginning, I believed real estate was fundamentally local. Deep neighborhood knowledge, strong relationships, and a thoughtful, data-driven approach were the foundation of the business I wanted to build. I also knew I didn’t want to put my own name on the door. I wanted to create something that other talented, ambitious people could be part of, bringing their own expertise and accomplishing more together than any of us could on our own.
I had a pretty clear idea of what I wanted to create. What none of us have is an exact roadmap for getting there.
The early years were spent learning, finding opportunities, and figuring out how to turn a vision into a business. Most of it was in the South End.

Those years had their advantages, too. In 2015, Katie and I disappeared to Istanbul for four days. The company was barely a year old, and I’m not sure anyone noticed we were gone. There was something pretty wonderful about the freedom of those early days, even if it came with plenty of uncertainty. Three kids and more than a decade behind us, life looks (and feels) a little different!

@amarkson joined as our first sales agent in 2016, and @rachelbakish came aboard in 2018 to take our marketing to another level. There were just a few of us in a little Back Bay WeWork office, but we were beginning to put some real structure around what we were doing.
By 2019, we were taking on bigger projects, expanding into new development work, and starting to find our footing as a company.
