Big news from CMA. Beginning July 1, visitors ages 25 and under, as well as one adult caregiver accompanying children 16 and under, will receive free admission to the Columbus Museum of Art’s East Broad Street campus. This change is part of Access 150, a transformative five-year initiative made possible by a $4 million lead gift from the Walter Foundation—the largest investment in access and education in CMA’s history. By expanding access for young people and families, CMA is creating more opportunities to engage with art, imagination, and learning, while helping to inspire the next generation of artists, thinkers, and creators. Today, we're celebrating 148 years of CMA! 🎉 Did you know we were the first art museum in Ohio to receive a charter from the state? Here's to many more years of fostering creativity, broadening perspectives, energizing communities, and providing transformative encounters with art. Photo by @Feinknopf by @columbusmuseum
😸 We couldn’t celebrate #NationalCatDay without sharing our "CATS" installation in the JPMorgan Chase Center for Creativity! We’ve received nearly 10,000 submissions of visitors’ cats through our in-gallery activity. Have you spotted your beloved pet on the big screen? Visit "CATS" during your next visit to connect with the cats in our collection and celebrate your own feline friend. by @columbusmuseum
On this #NationalChocolateDay, nostalgia, art, and chocolate come together in one very sweet collaboration. For "Clare Rojas: Returning," Columbus-based chocolatier and confectioner Sweet Ghost transformed the exhibition’s ideas of homecoming and nostalgia into “Return Flight,” a PB&J-inspired milk chocolate bar filled with strawberry pâte de fruit and peanut gianduja. In our newest CMA blog post, Sweet Ghost founder Gabby Corpus takes us behind the collaboration—from finding inspiration in Clare Rojas’s work to turning a familiar childhood flavor into something entirely new. Happy birthday to Roy Lichtenstein! 🎉 Born in New York, Lichtenstein’s path to becoming a Pop art icon was shaped in part by his years in Ohio. Next month, join art historian Avis Berman for a closer look at Becoming Roy Lichtenstein: The Ohio Years. Becoming Roy Lichtenstein: The Ohio Years Thursday, November 19 | 6:00–7:00 PM Free to attend Avis Berman, author of “Becoming Roy Lichtenstein: The Path to Pop,” will trace Lichtenstein’s aesthetic development through his Ohio roots, from his education at The Ohio State University and later stint there as a teacher to his eventual move to Cleveland, where he struggled to find his own style against heavy odds. Berman will discuss Lichtenstein’s transformation from obscurity into an iconic Pop artist who redefined American art in the 1960s, and how the people and experiences that shaped his life in Ohio influenced his path to Pop. This event is co-sponsored by The Ohio State University’s Office of Academic Affairs. Learn more at the events and programs link in our bio. by @columbusmuseum
🧹✨ Witches, broomsticks, and a little bit of magic. In the spirit of spooky season, we’re taking a closer look at this otherworldly work in our special exhibition “Clare Rojas: Returning.” A woman looks to the sky, gesturing to figures above. Where one might expect birds, we encounter silhouetted witches, broom and all. Similarly, fantastical figures populate distant tree branches in place of crows overhead. A dramatically sloped tree, echoing the angle of the female protagonist, suggests a transformation of the landscape and the woman alike in the face of mystical forces. Rojas speaks of her interest in witches and their fantastical worlds as a form of escapism. She wishes to revive the historical realm of “witchy” women who were healers and natural preservationists, independent from the prevailing patriarchal order. @ClareRojasArt Clare Rojas, “She Believed in the Magic of It All,” 2022.
