What are .parquet files?

Parquet files are column-oriented files designed to handle big datasets more efficiently. Parquet files store data column by column instead of row by row like a CSV or JSON file.

Because the data is grouped by column, much of the data in each column shares a common data type, which allows for a file size that is up to 60-90% smaller than a CSV or JSON file!

When querying from a .parquet file, only the needed columns are read, meaning that query time is significantly improved!
