Clean CDP stage run with my Griffin & Howe engraved ACW Prime in .45 ACP at my last IDPA match. Which, with the slow pace of this shooting, you can tell I was over-confirming my shots on this stage. That, and, sometimes I get distracted by how freakin’ gorgeous this gun is.

Competition is new to me and I am still learning the gamesmanship of it all.

I shot out the gold bead too, so I need to get that replaced. Other than that, I think this engraved ACW has seen more rounds this year than any other gun I have and continues to be my favorite to shoot.

Been on a @evolutiongunworks National Match bushing kick lately. The @108performance spring plug is my go to plug and always has been. All of my guns I put together get them. I love how it is reminiscent of the Colt M1905’s plug. by @combat_auto_group

Due to a pretty heavy travel schedule, my first-ever pistol competition just so happened to be an IDPA BUG match down in Eastern Carolina. Even though a 1911 isn’t really a “back up gun”, I just wanted to get a competition under my belt as quickly as possible and shot the match “NFS”. In truth, I didn’t see a whole lot of BUGs in the first place and even though concealment was waived, I decided to continue shooting the match in my normal street-carry gear.

Using a @miltsparksholsters Summer Special II, S4C magazine carriers, and belt, I shot my square-guard @alchemy1911 Prime from concealment with full-bore @magtechammunition 230gr hardball. My “competition” gun is just my “summer carry” gun, since the humidity makes it a bear to keep up with a blued gun against your body all the time. At any rate, it’s awesome training to run these matches “as you came”.

Make ready? Shit, I’ve been ready since I put a belt on this morning!

With the exception of cumbersome reloads from concealment, all the gear performed fabulously. I only dropped two points the whole match and both of those were just from being a little careless in regard to how the stage was set up.

I’m still learning the gamesmanship portion of competition shooting, but overall it was incredibly fun.

The original stock gauge given to @herrettstocks by the US Government when they were fulfilling stocks for military armories for the 1911. This gauge id still bring used today and seen here from a trip to their factory in December 2025. It’s still being used today so when you buy a set of their stocks it’s a tangible piece of 1911 history. by @combat_auto_group

The Mexican Defense Course- Early Combat Auto Shooting.

BS'ing with Matt Haught from @symtac_consulting at a recent shotgun event, he reminded me of an article on a very early that we'd both read years ago, so I dug it out from @gunsmagazine_official

As a training history nerd, I'm always interested in quals and shooting courses from the past, and what was considered important at a given time.

Fairbairn and Sykes in China put huge emphasis on close range point shooting, hit em somewhere between the nuts and neck.

But, American combat courses tended to emphasize extreme precision with token close range work. The dominant qual in the US for many years, the PPC course from the FBI, had a close range portion, but points and winners were made at distance.

So the Mexican course represented a good compromise, ten yards, multiple targets, multiple angles, and a strong emphasis against "gaming."

It would go on to be picked up by Cooper in the early days of the SWPL, and Ken Hackathorn would have friends shoot it throughout the years. Karl Rehn has an article on his site shooting a version Bill Wilson came up with.

For all my training junkies out there, don't jump to start making this the next big drill of the month or something. It takes two people, the ability to mount six targets, and a range comfortable with these movements. I've kinda cheated in the past by setting my timer to random and pressing the button as I got near the starting points, but it's not the same. You CAN do it, but we have other drills that can test these skills.

And of course, issuing ammo and holsters would never fly today- the one time IPSC tried to issue ammo in I think 1980 Nats, there was almost a revolt.

Still, for the time, the Mexican Defense Course was probably the best thing going. And competitiors picked up on things that would become standard- the auto as superior to the wheelgun, cocked and locked carry with larger safeties, and- because the course did not require a shooting technique- the superiority of fast sighted fire over hip or point shooting. Thank you @majorkongindustries for bringing the MR07 back to life! So excited to have one in the pile.

One of the best things we can do to keep cool stuff alive is support the people going out of their way to make it happen. If you don’t have one yet, you’re missing out on a Gucci piece of GWOT kit.

Sunday morning tinkering with a NOS @108performance rear sight for a P30L I found in the wild recently. A USP sight pusher will remove the rear sight on a P30/P30L but the shape of the 10-8 is shaped in a way that it cannot push it back in so it has to be done with a punch. ☕️ 🧰 by @combat_auto_group
