The Hampshire College pre-sale is open for 2 more days and will close on Wednesday at 5pm.

It's been amazing to connect with so many former students and to call up so much vivid detail about the placd. I loved renting the single person video carousels and watching movies. The walk from the library to the art barn was exactly one cigarette long. The Black Sheep sandwiches at the school store....🩷 by @cometees

Hampshire alums @pissdrinker and @elizabethyoule 🩷🩷

"To this end, (Hampshire) will try to help each student gain a greater grasp of the range and nature of the human condition, past, present, and possible future. It will aim at assisting each student toward a greater sense of himself in a society whose meaningfulness and quality depend in significant degree on him. It will seek to strengthen his command of the uses of intellect to educate and renew himself throughout life. And it will try to enhance his feeling for the joy and tragedy that are inherent in life and art, when both are actively embraced. The total college program through which Hampshire will pursue these ends emphasizes intellectual inquiry, artistic experience, engagement with the non-academic world, and a college culture that will support these things." Franklin Patterson, 1966

Hampshire’s premise wanting to create a place for students to decompress from the anti-social and technocratic pressures of society—where students could focus foremost on experience and learning, without requisites. They also saw their mission as one of responsibility toward the greater community—toward the problems of society. There is poignancy in their failure as a business, and the feeling that these values cannot sustain themselves in the society of 2026.

The proceeds from these sales will be donated to the Hampshire College Workers’ Emergency Relief Fund. by @cometees

In April, when Hampshire College announced it will be closing I was surprised at how gutted I felt. While I was heartbroken to think there is a definite end to this lineage, their closing feels emblematic of the times we live in....

Hampshire has been perhaps the most radical of the liberal arts schools. They were the first American financial institution to divest from Israel, and they have an incredible list of former faculty including Eqbal Ahmad, James Baldwin, Yusef Lateef, Moshé Feldenkrais among others.

In the early days of the college, they had a class taught by Ray Coppinger called “The Dog,” and a program involving breeding border collies and livestock guardian dogs to help solve problems for local sheep farmers in the Connecticut Valley.

While I was at Hampshire they had study abroad programs in Chiapas amongst the Zapotistas and Cuba, and Betsy Hartmann’s legendary PopDev program—a center for feminist scholarship that challenged traditional population control movements by prioritizing human rights and reproductive justice. They had a full fledged student-run farm with vegetables and livestock.

Hampshire was a dream child of the 1960s. In the past couple of weeks, I re-read their founding text “The Making of a College” written in 1965 by the college’s first president Franklin Patterson. In it, Patterson describes the college “ as a vehicle for the realization of self in society.”

In this spirit, the proceeds from this fundraiser will go to Hampshire College Workers’ Emergency Relief Fund. by @cometees
