Spider-Man / Superman – Brad Meltzer : An unbelievably strong opening, it had everything you’d want from a story featuring these two. Nail-biting action sequences, high-stakes survival, and some brilliantly sentimental exchanges to top it all off. 9.5/10

Spider-Man Noir / Superman – Dan Slott : Surprisingly effective. Both characters were in their element with some fun exchanges and really well structured paneling. 9.3/10

Gwen Stacy / Lana Lang – Joe Kelly : While the dialogue was a little heavy-handed at times, it felt really sweet and human, like you were eavesdropping on a conversation between lifelong friends. 8.6/10

Mysterio / Superman – Geoff Johns : Quintessential Geoff Johns, and it works so well. What could’ve just been a generic Marvel vs DC showdown was actually a compelling and compassionate tale, loved it. 9.2/10

Hobgoblin / Steel – Louise Simonson : A little uneventful, but still really fun. I’m a big fan of both Steel and Simonson’s writing, so this checked the boxes I was hoping it would. 8.2/10

Ghost Spider / Supergirl – Stephanie Phillips : I wish this went on for longer, I absolutely adored the dynamic between these two characters. It was witty and charming, managed to do a lot with very few pages. 8.9/10

Miles Morales / Superman – Brian Michael Bendis : Simple and short, albeit a little preachy. I found Miles to be well written, but Clark felt a little flat. Still, not bad at all. 8.3/10

Thor / Wonder Woman – Jason Aaron : Definitely showed its hand a little too early. I get the concept, but it felt a little trite by the end of the story. Could’ve done with less of the same. 7.9/10

Spider-Man / Superman – Jeph Loeb : Really somber, almost felt like an extension of what he’s written for both characters. It delivered on themes of grief and loss frighteningly well. 8.7/10

Batman : Gargoyle Of Gotham (Issue 3) - Rafael Grampá

Probably the most metal bat-book I’ve read in quite some time, this absolutely rules. Faced with a man named Doctor Geist, Bruce tries to fight his way out when he’s forced to realise a great darkness within him. Empowered, but burdened by a terrible evil, Bruce rampages before being whisked away by a group of ragtag strangers. As he recovers, it’s revealed that Geist had a hand in Bruce’s “recovery” after the passing of his parents, where he was subsequently brainwashed and turned into a latent weapon, with the same truth being revealed to Jim Gordon.

Bruce manages to break away, adorning a homeless man’s clothes before walking out into the crowd and hobbling along towards Alfred. He tries to procure a phone when he’s attacked in the subway by one of Geist’s men. An all-out war ensues, only coming to a close when Bruce throws him in front of an oncoming train car. He might’ve survived, but he feels himself slipping away with each new bout of violence.

This book is cool, not just because of how wicked the visuals are, but because of the thematic density that accompanies those brilliant illustrations. Batman has always been a manifestation of trauma, but to make him a figment of young Bruce’s dissociation is such a powerful concept. When you consider how this book’s been underscored by the conflict arising from Bruce’s double-life, turning Batman into a separate personality makes that battle so much grittier. He exists as a casualty of the battle between two halves of his own mind.

Class disparity has also been a constant theme within this story, and seeing Bruce fade into the background when robbed of his usual grandeur was a nice touch. His reaction to that ignorance felt appropriately panicked, since this is the first time he’s seen what it means to be a regular person in Gotham. Going into the finale, tensions are at an all-time high, and I’m beyond excited to see everything play out.

Fantastic Four (Issue 14) – Ryan North

I fear that I might be a little too stupid to fully appreciate this issue, but I was blown away nonetheless. The family’s preparing for dinner, waiting on Reed to exit the lab and join them. But one by one, everyone starts walking over to where he’s sat, apart from Jo and Nicki. The pair find them entranced by a sequence of numbers on a screen. The kids discover that this particular sequence is a cognitohazard, but they’re safe due to their alien physiology.

After consulting both Skrull and Kree scientists, they realize that the solution is to change how Pi is interpreted. By going back in time, they alter human ancestry to give them five fingers instead of six, thereby making ten the number of units that they find most natural. The day is saved, and the siblings are the only ones who’ll ever remember this adventure.

I cannot exaggerate how flabbergasted I was when that reveal about fingers came into play. I went back and flipped through the book again and all of the illustrations depict characters with 6 fingers on each hand, blending in through how they were posed or by barely cutting them out of the frame. This through-line alone gave this issue an undeniable charm. I continue to appreciate North’s episodic style, with Jo and Nicki making the most of their role as protagonists within this issue.

They’re both quirky and lovable in their own respective manners, and still read as kids despite their heightened abilities, which I really appreciate. I’ll admit, the entire math sequence went way over my head, but North’s ability to truncate things like that for a less scientifically inclined audience helped with the comprehension. Again, the six fingers thing was genius, and I would probably find a lot more to compliment here if I also fell into that category myself. North’s Fantastic Four is truly a one of one.

Absolute Flash Vol. 2 Still Point chega com a responsabilidade de manter o impacto do primeiro encadernado, mas a verdade é que a empolgação inicial se perde um pouco. Jeff Lemire abre muitos plots, mas não aprofunda nenhum deles como poderia, deixando a sensação de que a narrativa corre sem mergulhar nas camadas mais densas do Velocista Escarlate.

O grande foco é a conclusão da história de Eobard Thawne, o Flash Reverso. No universo original, ele é um sociopata genial, manipulador e calculista. Aqui, Lemire opta por retratá-lo como um monstro grunhento, mais físico do que cerebral. Essa mudança pode ser vista como ousada, mas também como uma perda da essência que sempre fez de Thawne um vilão tão fascinante.

Entre os momentos que chamam atenção estão o confronto final entre Flash e Thawne, intenso, mas sem a profundidade psicológica que poderia torná-lo memorável; as linhas temporais alternativas, que abrem possibilidades interessantes, mas são exploradas de forma rasa; o espaço dado a personagens secundários, que aparecem mais, mas não chegam a se desenvolver; e o encerramento do arco de Thawne, que fecha sua participação sem a grandiosidade que os fãs esperavam.

Os desenhos cumprem o papel, mas não encantam. São medianos, funcionais, sem a força visual que poderia elevar a narrativa. Ainda assim, Absolute Flash Vol. 2 é leitura obrigatória para quem acompanha a saga e quer debater os rumos que Lemire escolheu para o herói. Gambit : Wanted (Issue 1) – Chris Claremont

One of the greatest writers ever born tackles a character he clearly adores, not bad at all mon ami. Tracing back the steps to when Gambit first encounters the X-Men, we see him deliberating on whether or not to join the team after reuniting them with Storm. Mardi gras consumes the city, but Remy’s forced to ditch the festivities and rescue a young girl from a poker table she shouldn’t be at.

The ringleader of said table, Suzerain, enlists the help of Bullseye to capture both him and the girl. They’re ambushed by the miscreant, leading to an all-out brawl between Gambit and the legendary assassin. Gambit manages to end the fight by pinning Bullseye underwater, eventually going back down to save him to honor what “Li’l ‘Roro” would’ve done. But this act of kindness might be his undoing.

He’s not as good as he used to be, but Claremont’s still capable of delivering a solid read. Gambit’s a character whose origin is weirdly convoluted, given that there’s maybe 4 separate iterations of it, so a retcon does a lot more good than harm. This book reads like a classic issue of Uncanny. It’s introspective, it faultlessly captures the voice of the titular character and it holds true to the morals of mutanthood that Claremont established throughout his run.

The plot’s simple but effective, establishing the central conflict and main players without any wasted time or beats. Bullseye’s a fun choice for a villain, serving as an absolute foil to a Gambit that’s still grappling with the concept of heroism. Plus, the card motifs make them a winning pair. My only gripe with this story is the art, I feel like it lets down what’s otherwise a pretty acceptable read. Something about the way it’s structured, and how drab the paneling is, keeps the book from feeling as kinetic as it could’ve been. Regardless, it’s Claremont, I’m seeing this through to the end.

Generation X-23 (Issue 5) – Jody Houser

Probably the only X-book with the potential to expand into something greater, I’m all for it. Having been freed by the reality-defying X-80, Laura’s briefed on infinite’s history by her unexpected savior. X-80 reveals that Infinite was once X-39, a protective child who grew maddeningly obsessed with genetic experiments at the behest of a Professor. As time progressed, his fellow clones became little more than test subjects, an obsession that led to where they currently find themselves.

As he takes Gabby to supplement Laura’s DNA, the latter manages to catch him by surprise with the help of the other clones. They’re forced to flee when X-74 tries to take him out and destroys the facility. As the surviving mutants look forward to new beginnings, Infinite holds the lifeless body of X-66, having lived thanks to her ill-advised sacrifice.

We’ve reached the end of the first arc, and I’m fairly satisfied with where we currently are. The insight into Infinite’s backstory helped establish him as a threat and while I don’t buy the tragedy aspect of his character, I can see him working well enough as a one-off villain. X-80 was probably the most interesting part of the story, since her indifference towards linearity means she can pop in whenever and wherever, which makes for engaging moments in small doses.

I’m really excited about the team that’s bound to be formed with these clones, the X-verse has been very uninventive lately and some fresh faces might be exactly what’s needed in a space that’s fallen victim to saturation. I wouldn’t mind something akin to NYX, save the gratuitous edginess of that 2000’s run. This book is still far from perfect, having fairly awkward pacing and relatively forgettable action sequences, but I see this as more of a launchpad for things to come. If all goes well, these clones might get names and we might get an X-book that shakes things up.

Esta obra-prima escrita por Joshua Williamson não só impressiona com sua narrativa envolvente, mas também nos presenteia com a arte espetacular de Andrei Bressan.

O roteiro de Williamson criando um universo parte Senhor dos Anéis, parte Matrix parte Conan que é repleta de ação e reviravoltas que mantêm o leitor preso do início ao fim. Jubilee : Deadly Reunion (Issue 1) – Gene Luen Yang

This turning out to be a disappointment really bummed me out, I went into it with pretty high hopes. Back from a bout of X-Men shenanigans, Jubilation goes up to her room and finds an unwelcome stranger sitting at her desk. Everyone prepares for another battle, only for the mysterious man to reveal himself as Eason, Jubilation’s cousin. Her Aunt Hope’s vanished, and given her life as a career criminal, that’s never a good sign.

The two make their way to Chinatown, asking locals if they’ve any idea where she might’ve gone. After a tip about Hope discovering a big score, they find her having fallen victim to the Techno-Organic Virus. Jubilation comes through and manages to save the day, ending on a sweet and familiar note.

This book should’ve been so much more than what it actually is. What’s meant to be an examination of identity, particularly Jubilation’s supposed disconnect from her Chinese heritage, comes off as arbitrary. The internal conflict throughout this issue feels so tacked on, at no point did the exchanges within the story come off as natural. Whether it was Jubilee’s internal monologue or her banter with Eason, it felt like they were saying things because they were supposed to, like they’re hitting some quota for insecurity.

That disconnect is entirely absent, yet its existence is hammered into your brain at every turn. We get tidbits of Jubilee butchering her family’s dialect, but that’s about it. This book’s concept of culture comes off as really facetious. Jubilee being “less Chinese” because she can’t argue with an old Cantonese woman reduces culture to a performance, making being Chinese something she must do and not something she already is. Culture isn’t a set of benchmarks, it’s generations of lived experience. Admittedly, I did find the virus offering to make her the most Chinese person alive and her use of Chinese force-powers to be absurdly hilarious, but that’s more of a byproduct of bad writing than intentional comedy.

Review : Batman & Planetary

Recentemente, tive o prazer de reler Batman e Planetary, uma colaboração brilhante entre os talentosos Warren Ellis e John Cassaday (NTC). Este gibi é uma verdadeira ode ao Cavaleiro das Trevas, explorando todas as suas nuances e facetas.

Desde a primeira página, somos cativados pela arte detalhada de Cassaday. Cada painel é uma obra de arte, e a representação das várias versões do Batman é impressionante. Seja o sombrio vigilante noturno ou o detetive astuto, Cassaday captura a essência de cada persona com maestria.

A trama também não decepciona. Ellis tece uma narrativa simples mas envolvente que nos leva a diferentes épocas e dimensões.
