And here’s the Marvel version …

Marvel Comics: THE VARIANT COVERS
2018
📝 John Rhett Thomas
🎨 various
Publisher: insight comics

This author seems to have penned a number of books chronicling Marvel’s various cinematic and publishing output.

I could not find a name for attribution for the cover art, which is odd considering this is a book about cover art. 🤔 but I think the cover overall is very nice and the typography is somewhat elegant. The DC comics version of this it seems to be much more
“in your face than this one. That’s interesting to me because I always felt as though Marvel was the much more “in your face“ company.

Like the DC book, this book covers a number of the genres that have appeared as “variants”

All in all, this is a fun, oversized, coffee table book. I thought it was worth it.

Overall, this is a cool book and I found it in the bargain book section at Barnes & Noble. So it’s very affordable. by @comixray_6166

I thought a book like this would be inevitable… Also, I thought it would’ve been published by the big two themselves. But instead, we have a separate publishing company handling this chore…

DC Comics: VARIANT COVERS
“The Complete Visual History”
2018
📝 Daniel Wallace
🎨 various
Publisher: insight comics (never heard of this company, but apparently they’ve been around for a while and publish a lot of different stuff from cookbooks to Star Wars)

This book would have been a great holiday gift… For yourself probably.

I admire a good bit of the art on variant covers, but there’s something inside me that just cannot bring myself to buy multiple copies of the same story. But I know a lot of you do and that’s cool if that’s your bag.

I also remember when the variant craze started in the 90s that it eventually affected comic book sales and is blamed for the financial problems of the publishing companies at the time.

This author tries to point out that today’s variants are not the ones from the 90s. (Well they’re certainly less unit covers) the author feels like today’s covers are more driven by diverse art and themes. The book points that out quite well.

The book is oversized, but not all of the art is enlarged to the page. As the author examines each genre we get a large image of the cover and then several much smaller images that help illustrate his point.

I’d love to know how involved DC was choosing the artwork. Overall, this is a cool book and I found it in the bargain book section at Barnes & Noble. So it’s very affordable. by @comixray_6166

In honor of Wonder Woman day here are some of the pieces that I have picked up over the years.

Not everything here is impressive but I’ve been a fan of the character since Lynda Carter first bounded across my television screen as a young kid.

Tip: The new series by Tom King has been one of the best since the George Perez and Philip Jimenez years.
Happy Wonder Woman day to all!

Man o man. The cardboard crap they used to make during the 70s.

This meme is from 2020 but still holds up today.

This post goes out to our friend @pattiirish1
who had to put up with an unnecessary amount of vitriol from “comics Maga” which are two words that should never go together but the Orange cult is easily offended and it’s crying out for therapy.

How can you say that you’re a comic book fan and have never read or understood the classic Green Lantern Green Arrow?
Not to mention plenty of issues of Captain America, the Avengers and more recently Avengers Twilight. Go back and read some of Stan Lee’s Soapbox columns and check yourselves.

I was that young kid who has a huge fan of the original Sonny and Cher comedy hour. Here’s an image of a skit where Cher and Sonny along with “special guest star” Don Adams each portrayed the DC trinity.

(who remembers Don Adams?😉)

and here’s when fan favorite Harley Quinn made the jump from animated TV to the comics page!

You know her! You love her!
I’ve never been too thrilled about the way DC decided to glam her up. It’s kind of trampy 🤷‍♂️ it could have been better designed.

👉Hey, friends … I’m really busy with real life stuff. Hence the lack of posts to share. Hopefully you’re all mostly well. by @comixray_6166

Hey! It’s Mr. J 🙂
These photos are not the greatest but I had to snap some pictures of this car that has this Heath Ledger-Joker action figure glued all over it…

I’m kind of surprised that they’ve been holding on there that long.
I didn’t have time to go find the guy that owns it but it would’ve been an interesting conversation

I recently ran across this in my “to read” pile and just started it!

Batman: HOUDINI
1996
📝 Howard Chaykin & John Francis Moore
🎨 Mark Chiarello paints every page!

Quite the creative pedigree on this one so I don’t know why it’s taken so long to crack open the cover🤷‍♂️

First of all: does everyone know who the famous magician Harry Houdini is? Then head to Wikipedia because he’s a fascinating person!

The way it begins …
It’s 1907.

Harry Houdini is in Gotham for a performance and mingles with Gotham’s elite. Amongst them is Bruce Wayne, and others including Elijah Montenegro, the nouveau riche, self-styled “Beef Baron”. Also in town are other notables Tom Mix and actress Leonora Reinhardt. High society events like this include Gotham Globe reporter Victoria Vale. by @comixray_6166
