Marina Abramović — Phaidon Contemporary Artists Series
Kristine Stiles, Klaus Biesenbach and Chrissie Iles
Phaidon
2008
Softcover

The grandmother of performance art.

Since the beginning of her career in Belgrade in the early 70s, Marina Abramović has pioneered the use of performance as a visual art form. Withstanding pain, exhaustion and danger in her ongoing search for emotional and spiritual transformation, she has consistently made her own body both the primary subject and the medium of her work, exploring its physical and emotional limits in some of the most distinctive works in contemporary art.

Bringing together critical essays, interviews, visual documentation, and Abramović’s own writings — including early interviews and diary entries — this monograph stands as an essential document for anyone looking to delve deeper into the work and life of an artist who has profoundly changed how we understand and experience art. by @commonboooks

FRUiTS: No. 167
Shoichi Aoki
2011
Softcover

Founded by photographer and former computer programmer Shoichi Aoki, in 1997, FRUiTS was an ode to Harajuku’s street style.

For 20 years, resulting in an impressive 233 issues, Aoki would step out multiple times a day, on a quest to capture the most strikingly dressed individuals on the streets of Harajuku. He took a deep interest in the individuality of the neighbourhood’s youth, the authenticity with which they carried themselves, fearlessly playing with styles, colours, patterns, and brands. Perhaps unaware of the legacy they were leaving behind.

Deliberately avoiding embellishment, Aoki thought of himself as a documentarian rather than a creator, and looked at his subjects “like sculptures in a gallery”.

An invaluable record of subculture and a precious reminder that real fashion is out there: on the streets, being defined every day by ordinary people. by @commonboooks

Co-ordination Manual: Junya Watanabe — Comme des Garçons Man S/S21
2020
Hardback

A tribute to both the books that surround him and the working-class, Junya Watanabe presented his Spring/Summer 2021 collection for Comme des Garçons through a photographic narrative set in Japan.

Photographed by Keizo Kitajima across various Japanese cities, the publication features real working-class people, all captured at or near their workplaces — from mechanics and sword makers to bonsai masters, DJs and fishermen — fully dressed in Watanabe’s graphic-heavy garments.

“This season I found myself reflecting on the power of the books around me — precious items that I value, though I may not open them every day,” Watanabe said in a statement. “Many of the pieces in this collection depict and introduce these books.” by @commonboooks

Roadshow: Demi Moore
1996
Softcover

Focused on everything cinema, Roadshow was one of Japan’s earliest monthly movie magazines, published from 1972 to 2009.

This 1996 issue — released around the time Striptease was making its way to Japanese cinemas — puts Demi Moore front and centre. Looking at her personal life, filmography, and influence on 90’s style, this small gem stands as a true pop culture capsule. by @commonboooks
