"sever the tie that binds", they say...

tldr: Grandmatopia is a wonderful refuge for whom wish to seek it out and the stewards of the land are truly magical people. Thank you @deardustin , @telepathic_hug and @friendtern for sharing your light with me during my time there (and beyond).

insight: i recently took two weeks away from the peak holiday rush (a financially poor decision) and went out to do some community building with the fine folx at @grandmatopia in Dragoon, AZ. as an artist, i am struggling to keep the lights on so i have supplemented money jobs, as so many of us do, to keep up with the demand of living in a big city like Los Angeles. this year was hard and instead of punishing myself with taking every single job out of fear, i gave myself what i needed... time.

i can't really put this into words, and it certainly isn't advice, but i would encourage anyone who feels the emptiness of leading lives on social media to seek out community in the real world. i am spoiled in the riches of friendships and so many of those are also elevated due to their creative congruence, so finding communities was not too hard to seek out. it has occurred to me that being in community with others in person is counter culture these days. this befuddles me but i see myself thinking about social media as means to establish myself and in turn, i lose the thread that connects me to my craft, to my ideas and ultimately, to myself.

the people that are stewards of the land that Grandmatopia gave me grace in ways that i needed, and i fell hard for the majestic ways of the Sonoran desert. i came home to a full stack of projects but i don't find myself bound to provide in the way that i felt when i left. i'm proud to have these opportunities and i will give them what i can give but not so much that the product is a priority. art is calling that i have and i will be putting it in the lead of my efforts as i move toward whoever i am turning into.

inspiration: i always loved seeing sign painters take on old handsaws, so i figured it would be pretty straightforward to cut a bunch of holes and hand stitch some chains... lets just say i learned a lot patience and metal taken in Dragoon, Arizona by @commongenus

Globe No. 1

Chenilled sphere spinning on stainless steel and copper ring. The base is made of walnut and recycled skateboards. Lots of fun finally making this come to life. This was my first idea for a chenille sculpture back when I originally started stitching.

It was on display at the second Not Your Grandmas Machine show in October of this year.

what are you mad about? what has angered you recently? the smashing machine needs hate fuel to operate

thank y͎o͎u͎ to everyone who came to smash, and left all that “pretending to be well adjusted” at the door. imagine a life without guilt. imagine a world without shame. its okay to cry.

all proceeds from this fundraiser are going to the newest @davidnastcole production “magic moto adventure”. your rage and participation will not be forgotten. the smashing machine will always exist inside of you.

This one was killer!

@h.o.m.e.t.e.a.m x @filson1897 capsule with a rad bone typeface. This was a lotta effort but the tin cloth vests are worth the time on the machine, for sure.

If you’re in Seattle, go try and snag one. They’re limited to 15, and the line starts at 8pm tonight.
