We’re launching the 7th edition of the Common Ground Studio! Apply by 07.09.2026 ✨

The Common Ground Studio (CGS) is a student-led support program for artists at risk in Berlin with migratory experiences. The program runs for one academic year: October 2026 to mid-July 2027.

Our aim for this year is to help one another navigate the UdK context, learn together, and support each other’s artistic growth. We remain rooted at UdK while finding a new shape for ourselves. Due to ongoing shifts at the Faculty of Fine Arts, we’re currently unable to offer studio access to CGS members. Instead, we offer a regular program of gatherings — a space to come together, share work, and build community — alongside mentoring support, portfolio reviews, and a warm network of fellow students.

How to apply?

✔️A personal letter or a 2 to 5 minute video, that includes a brief bio, and that outlines your motivation, expectations, and interest in the Common Ground Studio.
✔️Portfolio — a digital portfolio (PDF format) with 5-15 works, maximum 10 MB.
✔️An artist CV or a document with your personal information (describe your experience) and contact information.
✔️Proposal — one sentence proposal for a shared encounter or a workshop for the CGS that reflects your work and/or your interests.
📩 Send your application to: support@commonground.berlin

We welcome all artistic practices!

Note: CGS does not grant the right to a visa to study in Germany, as it’s run by the efforts of multiple students and is not an official program of UdK.

Important information for the applicants:
Access Art Schools Berlin is launching a Special Program for Applicants to Art Universities — a Preparatory German Language Course (B2.2) that will start on October 5 and run until November 27. More info via link in bio.

Looking forward to the new edition! 🧡

On October 16, we visited HGB Leipzig to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the AtA (Academy for Transcultural Exchange) programme! @ata_hgb_leipzig

Established in 2016, AtA is Germany’s first regular study programme for students and artists at risk in the fields of fine arts and graphic design.

The programme creates pathways into higher arts education, supporting students in preparing for degree studies at HGB through artistic foundation courses, workshops, language classes and opportunities to explore different artistic disciplines.

We were delighted to celebrate this milestone together and to reflect on the partnerships we have built over the past few years.

At the same time, we stand in solidarity with those affected by the increasing pressure on resources dedicated to asylum, forced migration and anti-discrimination. Ensuring equitable access to arts education and supporting displaced and at-risk artists and students are institutional responsibilities that must not depend on temporary funding or shifting political priorities. These commitments require adequate public funding and long-term structural support to ensure that universities fulfil their responsibilities towards social justice and non-discrimination. by @commonground.udk

What does it take to create a university where access, belonging, and artistic practice are genuinely shared? Common Ground – A Student Initiative traces more than a decade of student-led work at UdK Berlin, supporting artists and students with experiences of displacement while challenging institutional barriers from within. Through peer networks, mentorship, multilingual programming, and collective care, Common Ground shows that inclusion is not simply about opening doors—it is about transforming the conditions that allow people to participate, create, and thrive.
