common room with Tommy Barlow + Mock Uncle (ambient set)

friday 9th october
the glad cafe
1900-2300

back at glad a little under three weeks time to welcome @t.barlo up to glasgow as part of his first headline tour.

been one to watch for a while now, and his first few releases since signing with YOUNG suggest he’s gonna be one to watch for a while longer. a seriously impressive live performer too so not worth skipping this one.

@mockuncle , whose debut single, Ember, dropped on @polished___stone on friday, will be gracing us with an ambient set beforehand.

tickets available through the link in our bio. by @commonroom.gla

+ Seraph

Seraph will have you like a rabbit in the headlights: eerie and fast, hypnotising and beautiful.

we’ve been dying to see them again since they first played at @totalrecall last winter and what better place than at our mutual london debuts.

tomorrow is the day. tickets on gel, ra and dice. by @commonroom.gla

+ Mock Uncle

if you haven’t come across Mock Uncle already, we’re sure this won’t be the last time. they’ve been keeping busy since they debuted for us last summer, and by the looks of it they’re only getting busier.

a show with @locust_mvh in a couple weeks time. a main room slot at the flying duck’s closing party in may. rumours of an upcoming release too, but we’ll say no more on that for now. incredibly tight production forms the basis for a sound that is detailed, measured and sure of itself in a way that goes to show how much these guys know what they’re doing.

here’s a snippet of them from @marquis_de_lad NTS show the other week. Mock are friends of common room, one of them even a co-founder, and we’re so excited to be doing our london debuts together. by @commonroom.gla

+ NURSE

a second, yet still long overdue meeting, between ourselves and NURSE.

NURSE is a coming together of some of glasgow’s most important and present artists and organisers. sunken vocals and echoes merge with a simmering yet propulsive drive. it’s industrial, it’s ebm, it’s punk, it’s NURSE. hooked us pretty quickly, as it did the rest of glasgow and other cities across the border. and who could forget that late night appearance during the Optimo residency at The Berkeley Suite.

in short, they’re a wicked bunch doing wicked things and you’d be a fool to miss it. by @commonroom.gla

+ Bianca Scout

with only a week or so to go until the big day, we thought it might be time to start introducing those who’ll make it all worth while.

Bianca Scout is a composer, producer, and multidisciplinary artist with a background in contemporary and classical dance. loops, collages, and fragments form the whole - safely guiding you both into and out of the gothic landscape she creates.

we last caught her during the opening ceremony of The Black Lights back in may, and we’re buzzing to have her be part of the bill next thursday.

we can’t believe that it’s the final weekend of the duck.

at the back end of 2024 we sat down with rob and lewis at stereo to have a chat about what we wanted to do with common room and how we wanted to programme it. this turned into a two hour hangout, with plenty of aspirational names thrown around. we immediately felt how invested they were in the space, as well as how keen they were to encourage us and take an active role in what we wanted to do. due to their efforts we’ve been able to host many of those names that were initially floated, even if rob did insist that moin was unlikely…

they trusted us with our first show, a friday night slot with wu-lu last january, and each of the five we’ve done there since we have felt inspired by the immense efforts of everyone there to get the most out of the space. it’s fair to say it wasn’t always the most forgiving, and it was only through everyone there being so receptive to new ideas and adjustments that it always felt tailored to each show that was on, and very quickly became a lot of people’s favourite spot in the city.

it’s so sad to see a venue with such brilliant programming come to an end. immeasurable effort went into turning that place around and making it a space people trusted enough to show up without necessarily knowing what was on. endless thanks to @banks0302 @noble_leisure @cal.donnelly @lewislowe_redstonepress and all of the duck staff for being so welcoming, and for always being accommodating of our ideas - even when we wanted to put three office chairs on stage (we didn’t return to that one).

please support your local venues as much as possible. so much goes into these spaces, and it’s so important that we do what we can to keep them running. sending love to everyone who put up a fight til the end.

here are some pictures from common room at the duck, as well as one of the three of us coming together fresh-faced as part of our first venture into promoting as beton brut. can tell bilge was into the place from the start.

if you can head along at all this weekend then please do, you’re guaranteed a good time. and be extra nice to all the staff - this closure is harder for them than anyone else. taken in The Flying Duck by @commonroom.gla

+ Impey + sleepier (spirit blue)

where to begin. Impey and sleepier aka spirit blue have been with us from the start. they took the lead on our second night at duck last april, and it’s been nothing short of a pleasure to watch them get the recognition they so clearly deserve since then. we’re talking horst, rally, and an appearance at barcelona’s sala apollo as part of xl’s primavera takeover.

but we’re inviting them as Impey + sleepier. two immensely talented and lovely people, famed for their early bird nts show but they’ll be taking up a later slot on friday as they close out the night. their styles, both as individuals and collectively, know no bounds, and we can’t wait to hear what these tastemakers bring with them.

Drama is one they spun when they guested on our buena vida show and it’s become a firm common room favourite since. no prizes for knowing who that is over the top…

fast approaching now, you know what to do! by @commonroom.gla

+ James Massiah

James Massiah is a south london poet and musician. his work is a continuous and layered exploration into sexuality, mortality, and hedonism, variously expressed through performance, writing, and visual media.

long-time dean blunt collaborator. further work with jawnino, massive attack, joy orbison, and daniel avery, as well as readings at tate modern and the ica. his monthly nts show sees a convergence of dub, dancehall, acid, grime, and poetry only made possible by someone so interested in and so integral to so many scenes.

been on a roll recently too - from true romance to bounty law to contact high. not to mention the unmistakable contributions of dj escrow.

a real privilege to be hosting James in a few weeks time. we’d hate for you to miss it. by @commonroom.gla
