Pushed the limits on this one 🏀🎨

This basketball court mural in Naracoorte features the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo — an endangered species that’s deeply significant to this area. It might be the first semi-realistic bird ever painted on a basketball court in Australia… we’re not 100% sure, but it definitely feels like new ground.

Huge thanks to everyone involved, the local community for sharing their stories and love for Naracoorte’s favourite bird, and Naracoorte Lucindale Council for backing the vision and making this project possible. by @communitiesincolour

Less than a year ago I hit the road with a vision. Communities in Colour, painting sports courts and murals across the country. 40,000km and nine months later, Jimmy and I found ourselves in Macau at the 2026 Sport Group Conference & Awards.

We took out Project of the Year in our very first year. I don’t think either of us has fully processed that yet and I’m not sure we ever will. To be surrounded by that level of expertise and experience, and to leave with new friendships and knowledge we’ll carry into every project going forward, means more than the award itself.

But this project holds a deeper place in my heart. The mural featured the native and endangered red-tailed black cockatoo — an idea from my grandfather, my biggest supporter from day one. Midway through prep, he suffered a heart attack and was airlifted to Adelaide. Jimmy and I kept working. He was discharged just as we were wrapping up, and the look on his face seeing something he was a part of designing come to fruition... that’s worth more than anything. We laughed about it over a beer later. We reckon he was just trying to pull a sickie and get out of the coffee run.

Thank you to the Naracoorte Lucindale Council for the opportunity and trust. To everyone we met at the conference who inspired us to keep pushing the limit, Ebony and Alyssha !!!! And to the APT Asia Pacific team for the invitation to such an incredible experience! What a blessing it is to exhausted from the pursuit of our own choosing, and to be recognised for this pursuit is just the cherry on top.

Thankyou very much, we are extremely excited for what the future holds!
