Community legal – We’ve got your back

When things go wrong, we all need somewhere to turn. That might be a doctor or a hospital. That might be a homelessness or mental health service. It might be food relief or Centrelink. For many, it will be a community legal service. Last year, community legal services assisted more than 75,000 Victorians with over 170,000 legal problems. We’ve got your back.

Community legal services are an important part of Victoria’s safety net. We support people to escape family violence. We prevent homelessness. We relieve financial pressure. We help communities rebuild after disasters. When things go wrong and Victorians are faced with problems and crises, community legal has their back.

However, funding shortfalls mean that we are forced to turn away two people who seek our support, for every one we can help. These people miss out on the help they need to avoid issues escalating, resolve their problems, or recover after a crisis. It is time to give Victorians the support they need to thrive.

Our services are free and we work in every Victorian community to help people get through life’s toughest times. We have Victoria’s back and now we need your support. Ahead of the November State election, please join the campaign and make sure Victorians get the help they need when they need it most.

What are community legal centres? 🤷‍♀️⚖️

You may have heard about them, used their services, or supported them.

🗯️ In short, community legal centres (CLCs) provide free information, advice, representation, casework and education. They work with people who are experiencing disadvantage, such as financial hardship, family violence or discrimination.

Every year, CLCs deliver 100,000+ legal services across Victoria, and half a million people use our free self-help resources!

📍From the metropolitan area to regional towns and remote communities, CLCs work with people wherever there is legal need.

We advocate, educate and collaborate for a fairer society. And it works - the Australian CLC model is recognised globally as an effective mode of service delivery.

Mallee Family Care Community Legal Centre (MFCCLC) celebrates 30 years.

Over the past 30 years MFCCLC has grown to become a critical part of their community serving 1,600 clients living in 35 towns across an area of 294,200 km2.

It was inspiring to join MFCCLC’s celebration in Mildura. Guest speaker Deb Tsorbaris (National Children’s Commissioner) highlighted the importance of access to justice and early intervention legal services for young people in regional, rural and regional locations.

@malleefamilycare's CEO, Teresa Jayet, and everyone who has been part of MFCCLC's work over the past three decades, including current Executive General-Manager Lisa-Maree Stevens and Principal Lawyer Leanne Bosman, can be extremely proud of what they have achieved to ensure everyone has access to justice - no matter where they live.

“Thirty years on, our focus continues to be on the most vulnerable people in our community, those at risk and experiencing disadvantage, because everyone deserves access to justice,” Teresa said.

The Federation was in Canberra yesterday, along with Knowmore and Hume Riverina Community Legal Service, to help Community Legal Centres Australia launch the Justice Where We Live campaign at Parliament House.

There are more than 50 community legal centres in regional and remote communities across Australia. They are deeply embedded in their local communities and support hundreds of thousands of people a year to resolve the legal, social, health and financial problems making their lives harder. This includes Hume Riverina which works across a large area covering parts of Victoria and New South Wales.

With Justice Where We Live, Community Legal Centres Australia is calling on the Federal Government to improve access to justice in regional and remote communities by:

✅ Implementing a HECS waiver for community legal workers in regional and remote areas

✅ Adding regional loading payments for regional and remote community legal centres in response to the higher costs of delivering services and to address the workforce crisis

✅ Investing in family law help for victim-survivors in regional and remote areas.

A great meeting yesterday with Minister for Emergency Services Paul Edbrooke to discuss the vital role community legal services play in preparing for and responding to disasters ahead of the upcoming bushfire season.

Louisa Gibbs, Federation CEO, and Daniel Scoullar, Federation Director of Policy and Advocacy, shared examples from across Victoria of how community legal centres have responded to fires, floods and extreme weather events.

We also discussed ways to better ensure legal assistance is built into Victoria's emergency management systems from preparation and community education through to crisis response and long-term recovery.

Access to legal assistance when people need it prevents a range of serious problems and helps them get their lives back on track.

Thank you, Minister Edbrooke, for a positive meeting and your support of the community legal sector.

Ask your local MP to back community legal services.

A terrific meeting with Minister Ros Spence to discuss the community legal sector ideas for policy reform across the Corrections, Youth Justice and Victim Support portfolios.

We encouraged the Minister to increase opportunities for children of parents who are incarcerated to have regular contact with their mums and dads and urged the Victorian Government to work nationally to extend the #NationalRedressScheme.

We also shared the sector’s policy platform, ‘Action for Justice: A Roadmap for Change’, and highlighted the importance of five-year funding agreements to ensure continuity of support for the people and communities who rely on community legal services.

Minister Spence is no stranger to the sector. Before entering Parliament, she volunteered with Broadmeadows Community Legal Centre (now Northern Community Legal Centre), appearing in Family Violence Intervention Order matters at Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court.

Thank you, Minister Spence, for a constructive discussion and for your longstanding connection to the community legal sector.

A fantastic meeting with @timrichardsonmp this afternoon to discuss community legal sector suggestions for policy reforms in his Consumer, Renters and Local Government portfolios.

Louisa Gibbs, Federation CEO and Joyce Chia, Federation Legal Policy Advisor shared the sector’s policy platform ‘Action for Justice: A Roadmap for Change’ and highlighted recommendations to address motor vehicle scams and strengthen rights for renters, drawing on the experience and expertise of community legal centres working alongside communities across Victoria.

We also encouraged the Minister to support the sector’s Community Legal - We’ve Got Your Back campaign, which calls for stronger investment in community legal services so more people can access free legal help when they need it.

Thank you, Minister Richardson, for a constructive discussion and for your support.

Last year, community legal centres helped more than 75,000 Victorians, but twice that many people were turned away because community legal centres do not have the resources to meet growing demand.
