Reliable access to safe water is not just a necessity—it’s a catalyst for progress.

Bhumi Pednekar visited Kolkulapalli, Telangana, to explore the Community Pure Water initiative and understand how access to safe, affordable drinking water is transforming everyday life.

From better health to reduced burden on women and improved school attendance for children, the impact is tangible and far-reaching.

Joined by CPW Founder Ravi Reddy, Board Member & Fundraising Chairperson Pratiksha Prashant, and Chief Philanthropy Officer Sumeet Rawla, the visit underscored how community-led solutions can create sustainable change.

A day that stayed with me.

I visited a Community Pure Water centre, not just to understand the process, but to see what real change looks like on the ground.

A simple idea, powered by intention… safe, purified water available 24x7.

And the ripple effect is powerful.

Less time spent walking kilometres for water. Fewer illnesses. More children in school, especially girls.
Women reclaiming their time, their health, their dignity.
Families beginning to grow, earn, and thrive.

In regions where even the groundwater isn’t safe, this isn’t just a facility… it’s a lifeline.

What moved me most was how something so basic can unlock so much. Health, opportunity, and economic progress.

Centres like these are already impacting close to 600 villages across India, quietly transforming lives every single day.

Sometimes, real change doesn’t come from something big. It comes from doing the basics right with intention.

Today, we hosted @alexcounts1 at our water purification center in Chegur, Telangana. He walked through each stage of purification with our team and the operator, and spent time with the families of Chegur.

“I’m very impressed with the community participation, which is beyond what I imagined, and also with the commitment to maintenance,” Alex observed.

Those are the two things our work is built on. The Gram Panchayat takes an active part in running the center, and an operator from the village keeps it going every day. Every center we build also comes with at least ten years of maintenance, with routine checks every 45 days and repairs within 24 hours.

Alex has spent more than 30 years in philanthropy and microfinance, and is the Founder and Executive Director of the @indiaphilanthropyalliance, former CEO of the @aifoundation American India Foundation, and founder and former CEO of @grameen_foundation USA.

CPW’s first center, in Pochampally, Telangana, has been running for 18 years. Families still fill their cans there every day. A local operator runs the center, and CPW keeps it working, year after year.

1 in 4 water samples from household tap connections failed microbiological standards in a 2024 national assessment of the Jal Jeevan Mission.

Clear water doesn’t always mean safe water. That’s why each CPW center starts by testing the water, and is designed to treat exactly what it needs.

Today, CPW centers serve 700+ villages and schools.

At ZPHS Chegur, Telangana, students could drink water only during the interval and lunch break. If they felt thirsty in class, they had to wait until the next break.

Today, every student has their own steel bottle and safe drinking water through the whole school day. Before heading home, they fill it once more, so safe water goes home with them too.

A small change in a school day. A big one in a child’s life.

Earlier this year, 22 students decided that children in their own state deserved safe drinking water.

They were part of Democratic Sangha’s second cohort of Young Leaders for Social Change, and together they raised the money for a water purification centre at Zilla Parishad High School in Chegur, Telangana.

Before, students at Chegur could only drink borewell water, and only during breaks. Now around 268 students and staff have clean water through the school day. Every child has their own steel bottle to fill in class and carry home.

The youth saw a problem and raised the funds to fix it.

Some of the best conversations happen around the table.

At the Indiaspora-India Philanthropy Alliance Summit (@indiaphilanthropyalliance) in Dallas, our Chief Philanthropy Officer Sumeet Rawla and Director-Markerting & Donor relations @reddy.rithika had the opportunity to host a lunch table focused on an issue at the heart of our work: clean water.

It gave us a chance to bring clean water into the broader conversation about philanthropy and social impact, and to exchange perspectives with others committed to creating meaningful, lasting change.

For our organization, clean water is more than an infrastructure challenge. It is foundational to healthier communities and to the opportunities that can follow when people have reliable access to safe water.

We are grateful to everyone who joined our table, asked questions and shared perspectives. These smaller conversations and connections are an important part of gatherings like this one.

The Summit may be over, but we hope the conversations around the table continue.

“While social media can be the launchpad, real-time field experience is what will truly engage a young donor.”
- Sumeet Rawla, Chief Philanthropy Officer

How do we engage a new generation of givers?

At the @indiaspora @indiaphilanthropyalliance Summit in Dallas, Community Pure Water’s Chief Philanthropy Officer, Sumeet Rawla, joined Preeti Nandanar and Amit Banerjee for “Not Your Parents’ Philanthropy: Innovations Meeting a New Generation of Givers,” moderated by Sanjeev Joshipura.

The conversation explored how philanthropy must evolve to meet younger donors where they are. For us, Sumeet’s reflection captures an important part of that shift: social media can spark awareness, but meaningful engagement can deepen when young donors have opportunities to connect with the work and experience its impact firsthand.

We were proud to contribute to a conversation about how philanthropy can become more engaging, experiential and relevant for the next generation.

Thank you to India Philanthropy Alliance and Indiaspora for bringing this conversation to the Summit.

Good health starts with the basics, and safe drinking water is one of them.

When families have reliable access to safe water, they can reduce their exposure to waterborne diseases and maintain better hygiene on a daily basis. It also helps families prepare food safely and gives children a healthier environment to grow, learn, and thrive.

At CPW, we are committed to making safe drinking water accessible and helping communities build healthier futures.
