After losing Banzai, I never knew if I would be ready for another dog.

And then, 8 months later at 6am, his photo came across my feed and I cried when I realized he was in Georgia. That was when it hit me, and I gave it a shot.

I'm not going to pretend it's a coincidence that he has so many of Banzai's traits. He was born shortly after Banzai died.

@renegadepawsrescue had every reason to pick someone closer. They read my application and chose me anyway — from across the country, for a dog plenty of people nearby would have taken in a heartbeat. I will never stop being grateful for that.

This is Batty Koda. Aka. Koda for short.

As I keep documenting Banzai's life, I get to start Koda's chronicle now.

I finished Banzai's first chapter today.

I didn't expect to cry making it. But there I was...
His collar,
His paw print,
This song,
And it just took over.

I have spent months channeling all my grief into building what I wish existed while he was still here.

A place to preserve his life story and all that he meant to me.

Some stories don't end. They just change shape.

To the passengers of @americanair Flight 2435, Savannah to Dallas: that was us. I'm sorry. 💩

Meet Koda. A rescue puppy from @renegadepawsrescue. Slept through the entire flight like a tiny gentleman, then, ten minutes from touchdown, unleashed something no seven-pound animal should be physically capable of producing.
An entire cabin pulled their shirts over their noses and looked around for the criminal. I kept my head forward and avoided eye contact.

We land. I now have a 40-minute layover, a poop-covered dog, and the Dallas airport, which is not an airport so much as a small city under construction.

Bathroom one: flooding into the terminal. Not today.
Bathroom two, a family restroom.

I open the kennel.

Koda's legs are flying in the air like he's trying to paint the Sistine Chapel. It's everywhere. On my shirt. On the walls. I am now washing a dog in an airport sink, which was not on my 2026 bingo card, and he is taking it as a personal betrayal.

Back on the terminal train with twenty minutes to go.
The train stops.

Five minutes. Ten. There is a pilot standing next to me and I ask if there's any way to walk from Terminal C to B. He looks at me. He looks at the dog. "You're better off on the delayed train."

We finally get to B. I ran. I have run through airports before, but never with a dog in a kennel bouncing on my shoulder, smelling like a crime scene.

Boarding started five minutes late. 🙏 I walked on gasping.

Kansas City. Home. Finally.

The dog relief area is only 200 yards away. I felt bad. He'd been cooped up. I set him down to stretch his legs for the walk over.

Mistakes were made. He pooped on the carpet before I took one step. 🤦‍♀️ Two airports. Two states. A whole new level of embarrassment.

But you know what? The sleeping puppy in my lap that night made it all worth it.

Here's the thing. Fifteen years from now, this is the story I'll tell. Not the sweet part. This one. It's one of the first things I wrote in his journal, because the small ridiculous moments are the ones that deserve remembering.

For the first hour, I kept waiting to feel like I was cheating on Banzai.

I picked Koda up at @renegadepawsrescue and got in the car and there were his teeth, poking through the zipper of the carrier, and I laughed for the first time in a while. Somewhere between the shelter and the hotel, the guilt just let go.

Loving him doesn't take anything from Banzai. It turns out there was room.

I am struggling to remember fifteen years of Banzai, especially the small things. So I started Koda's chronicle on day one.

The teeth are part of his first chapter.

I missed it. Yesterday was Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day and I let it go by without saying anything.

Then last night I sat down to watch Toy Story 5 for the first time, and there's a line in it where a character gets Bullseye's name wrong and calls him Banzai.

I about spit out my popcorn.

I say his name in my head every day. But hearing it out loud, on that day, when I wasn't looking for it, to me, that's a sign. I'm not sure what you believe. What I can tell you is that in that moment I felt him with me in a way I haven't since he passed in January.

So, a day late, and at his insistence, apparently: if you're missing a beloved pet, I would love to hear their name below. Because in some weird way, hearing their name out loud, unexpectedly, can mean the world for one brief moment.

His collar. A lock of his fur. The drawing my daughter made of him.

For months these lived in a drawer, in a box, in three different places because there wasn't anywhere right to put them.
