The question is not whether your parent loves their home. Of course they do.

The question is whether the house will keep working as they age. A few things I look at: is there a bedroom and full bath on the first floor? Can the laundry move upstairs when the stairs become an issue? How accessible is the bathroom?

Staying put can be a real plan, as long as it is chosen on purpose.

Today is International Day of Older Persons.

A day to celebrate the people who taught us that:
• “Back in my day” is a perfectly acceptable opening to a story. • You can tell how cold it is without checking the weather app. • “Because I said so” is apparently a family tradition. • And if you don’t know where something is, just ask Mom. She knows. She always knows.

But seriously… today is about recognizing the contributions, wisdom, stories, and experiences that older generations bring to our families and communities.

So call your parents. Check on your grandparents. Buy someone a coffee. Listen to a story you’ve heard 14 times before.

And remember: getting older beats the alternative. 😉
