It’s okay to sit with uncomfortable feelings.

Shying away from them doesn’t help our kids, especially when it comes to Truth and Reconciliation.

They don’t need us to have all the answers.
They need us to be willing to listen, learn, and have the uncomfortable conversations.

“I don’t care.” 🙄
Three words every parent and teacher has heard. And it’s rarely the truth.

Behind “I don’t care” is often:
💭 “I’m embarrassed.”
💭 “I’m overwhelmed.”
💭 “I’m afraid I’ll fail, so why try?”

When we react to the words, we get a power struggle. When we get curious about the feeling underneath, we get connection.
Next time you hear it, try pausing and saying: “It sounds like something feels hard right now. I’m here.”

Kids don’t need us to fix it. They need us to see it.

Save this for the next “I don’t care” moment.

When it’s too much, it doesn’t look the same on everyone.

One person raises their voice. Another goes silent. One clings tight, another pulls away. One gets goofy, another goes blank.

Swipe for what helps in the moment and what to do once the storm passes. 👉

Apologizing doesn’t mean giving up your authority.
It means showing that you’re human, self-aware, and willing to take responsibility.

And there are some pretty powerful benefits that come with that. ✨

An apology can:
• Build trust
• Strengthen relationships
• Model accountability
• Create emotional safety
• Teach healthy conflict repair
• Show that mistakes can be learning opportunities

Does this cycle sound familiar to you?

Re-training the brain takes time, but you do not have to do it alone!

✉️Send this to a parent or partner who needs to see this today.

📌Save it for the next time you need a reminder why taking away the screens as a punishment won’t work.

When your 4-year-old is melting down or your 9-year-old is completely overwhelmed, “just calm down” isn’t exactly a strategy.

Kids need actual tools to help their bodies come back to calm — and honestly, we could all use more of those.

I put together a free resource with 10 simple ways to help kids calm their nervous systems when big feelings take over.

Comment CALM and I’ll send you the link. by @compasstoregulation

👀 If these phrases make your blood boil the way mine does when I hear, “Whatever, I don’t care,” you are not alone!

It’s natural for these words to trigger us. We may experience them as disrespect, loss of control, or emotional disconnection.

What can help in the moment is reminding yourself that these responses may be a nervous system defense—a form of self-protection or language masking when someone is overwhelmed.

Instead of hearing these comments as a personal attack, try seeing them as a signal that their battery is completely drained.

Sometimes, “I don’t care” really means, “I don’t have the capacity for this right now.”

Spoiler Alert: We are all human and we all make mistakes. So your approach or reaction was not your finest moment. It happens.

While we may strive to get it right, when we don’t, we have the opportunity to model what it looks like to make mistakes and repair.

Modelling opportunities:

✨ Apologizing for our tone, volume, and our words.
✨Taking accountability without making excuses.
✨Repairing when we have caused hurt.
✨Re-connecting to co-regulate

Tip Tuesday: When trying to navigate your next meltdown, start by validating their experience, then quietly acknowledge your own stress. Accepting how you feel in the moment helps you prepare to connect with your child (physically, situationally, or emotionally) and guide them through the challenge.

Kids are SMART!

I am a HUGE fan of the Zones of Regulation. It’s fantastic seeing them used so frequently in classrooms and practiced by families at home.

However, there’s one major area where I see kids struggle: the expectation of a “quick fix” to jump straight back into the Green Zone.

When adults push for a quick reset, kids learn to mask their true feelings—saying they are “fine,” “okay,” or “good” when they are clearly still dysregulated.

What kids actually need to know:
Every zone is valid. All emotions are okay, no matter which zone they fall into.

Regulation takes time. The goal isn’t to force happiness, but to explore which coping strategies help them process the feeling.

Building lifelong skills. Learning to navigate each zone safely equips kids with healthy, adaptable coping mechanisms as they grow and revisit these feelings throughout life.
