Field Day: Fish, an all-ages event invited participants to connect with the Los Angeles River through two hands-on experiences. Along the river, Sam Reese (@compleat.__ ) led a fly-fishing demonstration, introducing participants to casting techniques and the fundamentals of the sport. Meanwhile, inside Clockshop, Derek Yee (@derek.yee.790) and his partner Angela guided a gyotaku workshop, where participants explored the traditional Japanese art of fish printing. Guests applied ink to fish to create detailed prints, leaving with their own unique artwork to take home.

In our post-event survey, Field Day: Fish was described as an out-of-the-box workshop.
“I would never have thought I'd have a chance to go out with someone who fishes the river. I'm pretty familiar with the river and have gone to a lot of river programming in my life as an educator and Angeleno. I had never heard anyone describe the way fishing absorbs you into the river, looking closely and immersing you, the way Sam did. Really outstanding and unusual opportunity to engage with the river.”

My copy of Gary Lafontaine’s ‘The Dry Fly - New Angles’ was the cheapest copy on eBay when I purchased it. When it arrived I was pleasantly surprised to find it signed with a fly tied by Gary himself. I confirmed this as an original after reading another article by him. All pre sales of this book came signed with an original fly - this book sold very well and he says it took him months of persistent work to tie the flies included.

The book is a masterpiece - I’m not sure if anyone in the trout fishing world is thinking at the level the Gary was, and if anyone is I want to meet them..

Boat maintenance!

I haven’t refinished the wood since I bought this boat 2+ years ago. It stays outside at a friend’s place so it was long overdue. It took a full day and more sanding than I originally thought it needed.

Maintenance is important! Now that the major work is done, a fresh coat every 6 months to a year should keep the wood fresh so I don’t have to do a full strip and sand again. by @compleat.__

Join us this Saturday, July 11, from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM to explore the local wildlife and aquatic species of the Los Angeles River Watershed. Guided by Sam Reese (@compleat.__ ), you’ll learn the basics of fishing and receive a field guide to help you continue your outdoor adventures.

You’ll also have the opportunity to experience a gyotaku demonstration by Derek Yee (@derek.yee.790). Gyotaku is a traditional Japanese art form that creates detailed fish prints by applying non-toxic ink or paint directly to a fish and pressing rice paper, cloth, or silk onto its surface. The result is a beautiful, life-sized print that captures the fish’s unique scales, texture, and form.

You’re invited to attend Field Day, an all-ages series inspired by the Bowtie Field Days held from 2017–2018. As Clockshop continues to raise funds for The Bowtie, we invite you to learn about and engage with urban habitats, wildlife, and waterways in the Los Angeles River watershed. In March, we hosted Field Day: Plants, which invited the community to learn about native plants and help plant native seedlings that will continue to flourish in the future state park.

Join us Saturday, July 11, from 10:00 AM–12:30 PM at Clockshop for Field Day: Fish to learn about local wildlife and aquatic species in the Los Angeles River Watershed! At the water’s edge, wildlife enthusiasts of all skill levels will learn about the species of the river, both native and non-native, as well as thriving and locally extinct. Attendees will also have a chance to cast a line themselves, guided by Sam Reese (@compleat.__) and Derek Yee (@derek.yee.790) will lead a gyotaku demonstration, a traditional Japanese method of printing fish. Facilitators will share the current status of the LA River and the forthcoming Bowtie Wetland Demonstration, a 3.5-acre stormwater filtration and habitat project by The Nature Conservancy.
