This Division III freshman pitcher dealt with elbow pain for the entire duration of the season after a winter that saw his average fastball velocity climb 3mph over the course of 3 weeks (79mph —> 82mph). Treatment from his trainers had made the pain, in his words, “worse” than it had been before.

His pain radiated from brachioradialis over the flexor mass, sometimes referring distally to the anterior wrist. This screamed “deceleration issue” to me.

So how did we get him throwing a 5oz plyo ball PAINLESSLY after working on this for two hours?

The answer was NOT strengthening the elbow, manual therapy, or stretching. It was almost entirely everything else.

Initial eval. found that he maintained full cervical, shoulder, and elbow ROM, but pain was elicited when testing ER in neutral.

So, I asked him to do a chin-up, where he could perform 4 consecutively. Upon retest, discomfort was still present. We then moved to the bench where we performed an incline row isometric hold for 30 seconds. We retested, and there was still some residual discomfort, but had gone from a 3/10 to less than a 2/10.

Finally, we incorporated wall-assisted handstands, but had to regress due to an inability to maintain form. So, we modified it to a “half” handstand. Reverse bear crawls were next on the agenda, where we saw the pain go from <2/10 to a 0/10.

Then, we threw the same 5oz plyo ball, where we made it a point to let the arm get into its slot before throwing, as it’s common for a low elbow slot to cause some discomfort in those already suffering from a gross shoulder/trunk instability.

Safe to say, he’s on the right track.

🚨COMMITMENT ALERT🚨

Congratulations to Matt LaSpina (@matt.laspina_) on his commitment to Hood College, where they CONTINUE to add stud 2027s from Long Island.

Matt started with us 2 months ago with some lingering issues after surgery, and has put all the work to combat those. As a utility player, he features 92+ EV and mid-8s on the mound, as well as great athleticism on defense.

Super proud of this guy. Going to be a huge winter for him! I can’t wait to see what his senior year brings, as well as what is waiting for him as a Blazer!

Got arm tightness? Stuck in the same endless cycle of throwing, feeling good, and feeling like crap the next day?

These are some of my go-to’s for those dealing with that exact issue.

If you’re not taking care of your arm, you’re leaving your career on the line.

Velo stuck? Arm always hurts? Command sucks? DM me! We’ll get it right.

Big league stuff here from one of our guys on a low intent day👀

A fastball, usually sitting in low 9s, that routinely comes from a low slot and has 20 inch horizontal, a recently developed changeup that has anywhere from 12-16 horizontal and negative vert (700RPM), and a sweeper that has 0x23 dimensions.

Not bad!

This summer, Bailey hit a new bullpen PR with us and was up to 86 in-game in July. This guy has the work ethic of a big leaguer and I’m so proud of him! Super excited to see his collegiate career through!

It’s going to be a HUGE winter for Bailey, as our goal is 88mph by the spring and to add 50+ pounds to all of his lifts.

JD Motes (@jd__motess) has been working his tail off!

He sat within 1mph of his PR for our entire bullpen last night. Long, slender athletic frame and a multisport athlete — he has a lot of room to grow!

Congratulations to Nick Teriaco (@nick_teriaco13) on his commitment to 2022 Division III National Champion, Eastern Connecticut State University!

Nick started with us in the middle of June and hasn’t looked back, gaining an average of 4-6mph on his fastball, as well as 3mph on his top fastball.

ECSU got a hell of an arm, a worker and a competitor — I’m pumped to see what this next year of development brings for Nick!

Why do I push my athletes to throw and lift at high intents?

1) Long-Term Performance and Arm Health Benefits
- If we build an engine that can sustain high-intensity activities, the athlete will eventually throw harder and stay healthy. The body can only accelerate as much as it can brake, so the better we build our brakes (deceleration patterns and muscles), the more efficiently we can produce power.

2) Making the training environment close to or more difficult than the game
- If you come into the facility 3 times a week and we push you to your limits, the game will start to become easier and performance will skyrocket. Besides the physiological changes that take place during training, the mental aspect of the game will get so much easier.

3) Building Confidence in the Athlete & Making Training Fun
- A program with no goals is just a wire that isn’t plugged into the outlet. Chasing numbers (velocity, bodyweight, PRs in the weight room) allows the athlete to see their hard work paying off. If the goal is to throw 90mph off the mound, we want to see all of our metrics increase as well. Giving the athlete external goals like PRing on a pulldown, long toss or on a specific lift will incentivize them to keep working towards the ultimate goal of elite performance. Without specific goals, the athlete may have trouble staying adhered to their program and progress will suffer.

Also, no more back leg cues please.

Want your elbow to stop hurting?🦾

Simply put, elbow pain torments thousands of baseball players and overhead athletes. Many put a band-aid over it by strengthening the muscles of the forearm. ❤️‍🩹

You’re not getting to the root of the issue. Why not aim to fix the problem once-and-for-all? Why not strengthen the structures of the trunk (which is what overhead athletes primarily use to rotate and stabilize)? 🌳

Food for thought!
