This guy was feeling every feeling at this exact moment. And SO WAS Samuel Barber, the Americano-est of all Americano composers. He was sort of like Copland but (only slightly) less homosexual.

Barber’s famous piece is this one here, the Adagio for Strings, in which the violins really get to enjoy themselves and everybody else tries to stay in tune. You should also probably listen to his First Symphony, which is very good and very short 🙌

Berlioz was perhaps the best composer - turned opium addict - to ever live! He was also French, but lets not hold that against him.

I have always wondered what contemporaries thought about Berlioz, the other Frenchies like Meyerbeyer, Franck, etc. Of course, I could go read a book and learn these things, but then I’d have no time to make these memes.

This project was truly such a special part of my @newschoolperformingarts experience! In addition to composing the score, I also held the boom mic and did the sound effects and dialogue editing. It was a massive learning experience and I made 10,000,000 mistakes, but that’s what student filmmaking is all about folks!

I have a new album out with music from the different indie movies I’ve worked on over the years. Music from BFFs4EVA comprises the first 3 tracks of the album 🙏

Igor Stravinsky (1882–1971) was a revolutionary Russian-born composer and conductor. Renowned as one of the 20th century’s most influential musical figures, he is famous for his stylistic diversity—most notably his explosive “Russian Period” ballets and his later Neoclassical and serialist masterpieces that forever transformed modern music.

Composer school is a place of mystery, discovery, and transformation ✨

The friendships and connections made between fellow music-obsessive colleagues create a lifelong impression. Especially as a composers, we get the chance to collaborate with all kinds of musicians and artists from other disciplines.

In this performance, violinist Jonathan Toomer @jontoom played my solo violin piece, “Grace,” accompanied by choreography by Aaron Tonaki @tonakii_

This kind of magical collaboration, free of worrying about marketability, paying for venue and practice space, is so unique and special to the artistic educational environment 👏

And of course thanks to @shenandoahconservatory and @okfeelgoodmusic for being the host and organizers of this program 😁

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, John Adams started to add a new character to his music, which he called “the Trickster”. The Trickster allowed Adams to use the repetitive style and rhythmic drive of minimalism while simultaneously poking fun at it. When Adams commented on his own characterization of particular minimalist music, he said that he went joyriding on “those Great Prairies of non-event”.

John Luther Adams, on the other hand, has never played a trick. The word isn’t even in his vocabulary. His existence is marked only by the deep hum of Earthly tones, deep resonances, and existential sonic journeys.

— Nobody, I just made that quote up, but you get the idea ✌️

Russian composers are kinda goated and there’s just no way around that. Maybe it’s the vodka. Or the starvation. Or the great weather.

But either way, between Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, and Rimmy Korsy (however you spell it) — the Russians really made a major contribution to classical music.

And this guy made a not so major contribution to this lake 🗑️

Berlioz was a French composer who ate many croissants. He also was a bit of a ladies man, if you catch my drift. But after he was friendzoned mega bad by this one lady, he went kinda crazy and did way too much opium.

Opium back then was really strong… you could say it was the good stuff, really of the masses! So ngl he really couldn’t just like chill and not think about this lady, he was way too worked up, so instead he wrote one of the masterworks of the 19th century.

basically any French person can and will do the same, if given the means and opportunity.

That’s just what I was taught, yall!

I found these chords in a spontaneous moment, exploring where the melody could evolve naturally.

I feel like there is something both familiar and new in this progression, the way it leans on and rebounds from the suspensions, using the crossing tones to get to distant key centers.

Wii Music also ducking 🦆 slaps!! So not mad at all by the comparison.
