I think one of the things I’m most grateful for is that I get to wake up every day and basically do my hobby for a living ❤️

There’s just something about old houses that I can’t really explain.....

Most of the time when I’m working in them, it’s completely quiet, and my mind starts wandering.

Who was this house built for?

Did a husband build it for the love of his life? Was it passed down through generations? Was there another staircase here once? Is there a window buried somewhere inside a wall? Were these rooms always this size, or did somebody move the walls around a hundred years ago?

I walk through these houses making up little scenarios in my head all day, because the house was built for someones story, the way someone lived their life.

Who took their first steps across these floors? Who sat by that big window? Which room was the playroom? Where everyone ate supper. What Christmas morning looked like here...where did they put the tree ? How many hands slid down the same banister until the wood wore smooth.

There’s just a warmth to old houses that I don’t think you can recreate. Big trim. Old wood floors. Plaster walls. Tall windows. Rooms that don’t make perfect sense anymore. Little details somebody took the time to make beautiful even when they didn’t have to.

There’s so much character in them, but more than that, there’s history.

New houses can be beautiful, but you can’t build an established story into one. You can’t manufacture a hundred years of people living and loving and changing things and leaving tiny pieces of themselves behind.

I think that’s what I love most about working on old homes.

I’m not just bringing a house back to life. I get to spend a little time inside its story, preserve some of what makes it special, and then send it off to become part of somebody else’s story.

Bitter sweet moment when flooring gets delivered, because that means we're nearing the end, but another one in the books to add to my Sunday drive by to see how its new family will have it decorated for holidays, birthday balloons tied on the steps out front "Honk, Donna's 50!!" Will their tree be in the window?

Today i felt so behind on things I needed to to, counter full or dishes, clothes in the washer, the dryer, the floor, beds not made, headlights are fogged up, need new tires, had to go out the cabin because I left my tub of coffee out there.
There was so much I was trying to fit into one day, things that "can wait" but the problem is that they have been waiting. Waiting far too long and thats why none of it is getting done and piling up on me.
I picked the kids up from school, and decided to do today's after school adventure to Devils Hill falls to explore with the kids, and go grab my tub of coffee.

Thats when I realized my dishes were dirty from home cooked meals, clothes in the washer because they were probably dirty from galavanting in the woods together, the beds weren't made because they were slept in cozy and warm last night, headlights were fogged on a car that has provided us with so much adventure and so much more to come, new tires tomorrow morning because we drive, and travel, and explore the road less traveled, and coffee out a cabin i get to use as a retreat as life's gift from some of the most amazing friends ive ever had.

I may not be as behind as I thought, and maybe this mess is just evidence of our life being lived ❤️

May we never again get so busy cleaning up life and its mess, that we forget to live it 🌍 by @con21192
