Why should performers be paid? Because professional artists are professionals. šŸŽ¶

We’re often asked why performers can’t simply volunteer their time in health care settings. Many artists do volunteer, and we deeply value those contributions. However, volunteering should never create an expectation that professional artists regularly provide their work for free.

A Health Arts performance takes preparation, time, skill, and expertise. Our performer partners show up ready to deliver a professional, consistent experience for older adults across BC.

We believe artists deserve to be paid for that work, just like any other professional.

Supporting professional artists also means supporting the future of live music. When artists are fairly compensated, they can continue doing what they do best: sharing their music, connecting with audiences, and bringing meaningful experiences into care and community settings.

There’s something special about live music accompanying a shared meal and good conversation. šŸŽ¶

At the end of the summer, @chartwellretirementresidences hosted a seasonal dinner featuring a special five-course meal made with local ingredients. As guests enjoyed their evening, @layeniofficial provided beautiful live harp and vocals as background music.

You can hear the conversations and laughter in the background of the video, a lovely reminder that music doesn’t always need to be the centre of attention to make an impact. Sometimes, it simply becomes part of the atmosphere, bringing warmth and beauty to an already meaningful gathering.

Chartwell Wesbrook Village is one of the retirement communities where we provide regular Concerts in Care, and we’re also delighted to be invited to provide music for special events like this one.

This Thanksgiving, we’re thinking about the people who make our communities feel like home. ā¤ļø

The people who check in, share a meal, lend a hand, tell a story, or simply make time to be together.

We’re grateful for the older adults who continue to share their stories, wisdom, humour, and experiences with the people around them. We’re grateful for the care partners, volunteers, musicians, caregivers, and community members who help create moments of connection every day.

And we’re especially grateful for the moments when music brings people together, sparks a memory, starts a conversation, or simply brings a little joy to someone’s day.

From all of us at Health Arts Society BC, Happy Thanksgiving. We hope your weekend is filled with good music, good company, and plenty of reasons to be grateful. šŸ‚šŸŽ¶ by @concertsincarebc

We’re delighted to have Van Django performing at our upcoming fundraising event. šŸŽ¶

Rooted in the gypsy jazz of 1930s Paris, Van Django is known for blending dazzling musicianship, driving rhythms, original compositions, and unexpected musical influences into performances full of creativity and joy.

Since forming in 1998, the group has toured extensively across Canada and internationally, with performances in the United States, Europe, and China. They have also been featured at Djangofest Northwest, sharing the stage with some of the world’s leading gypsy jazz artists, and have released four acclaimed albums.

As former Djangofest Northwest director Nick Lehr said:

"In an increasingly crowded niche, Van Django is a standout act."

We’re grateful to have such talented musicians helping make this special evening possible and look forward to sharing an unforgettable musical experience with our guests.

It seems hard to believe, but it’s true! šŸŽ¶

Time and again, staff tell us how music can bring a smile, spark a memory, inspire a singalong and sometimes reveal a whole new side of someone.

There’s something powerful about a familiar song.

What’s the one song that always brings you to life?

Right before Van Django's performance at Legacy Senior Living, we went through a quick run-through and captured the lady behind us enjoying the music.

It's small moments like these that remind us how important our work is. ā¤ļø

We can't wait to hear them again for our Fall Fundraiser!

Music means something different to everyone, so why limit the experience to just one genre? šŸŽ¶

With Concerts in Care, programmes can feature anywhere from one to four professional performers, with music ranging from Western classical and Broadway to jazz, folk, traditional Chinese music, and even spoken word.

There’s a lot to discover, and every concert offers an opportunity to experience something new, familiar, and meaningful.

In 2006, Sylvia L’Ecuyer experienced something that would change the course of her work. šŸŽ¶

At the first Health Arts Society concert, Sylvia witnessed firsthand what live music could mean to people living in long-term care. As the music filled the room, she saw residents light up, connect, and experience a moment of joy and comfort.

She recognized that this work had the potential to reach far beyond one concert.

At David Lemon’s suggestion, Sylvia reached out to people in her home province of Quebec to explore bringing a similar initiative to those who had limited access to traditional concert venues. Her efforts helped set the stage for the creation of @lasams_officiel.

Today, La SAMS has grown to bring thousands of music experiences to people in healthcare settings across Quebec, including seniors, hospital patients, and people living with cognitive loss.

Who knew that one small act of kindness could inspire one person, bring a group of people together, and grow into something that would touch the lives of thousands? ā¤ļø

There’s just one more week to join the Helena Choir! šŸŽ¶

If you’ve been thinking about joining us this fall, now’s the time to give it a try. The Helena Choir is a welcoming space for people experiencing cognitive decline, their care partners, volunteers, and community members to come together, sing, and connect.

No singing experience is needed, and there’s no pressure to be perfect. Just come as you are, meet some new people, and enjoy an hour of singing followed by coffee and conversation.

Fall sessions begin September 22 at our South Vancouver location. If you need help getting to the choir, transportation support may be available.

To learn more or get involved, email helenachoir@healtharts.org. We’d love to have you join us!

Whether they’re still by our side or we carry their memory with us, grandparents leave a lasting legacy.

Today, we’re celebrating the love, care, wisdom, stories, and traditions that grandparents share with us and the ways those gifts stay with us long after a conversation, a visit, or even a lifetime.

For some, today is a chance to spend time with a beloved grandparent. For others, it may be a day to remember someone who is no longer here. Either way, the impact they’ve had on our lives is worth celebrating. ā¤ļø

What’s something you admire about your grandparents, or a memory of them that you’ll always treasure? by @concertsincarebc

Can’t make it on Wednesday morning? Good news! The Helena Choir now has a Tuesday group, too. šŸŽ¶

And there are just two weeks left to join!

Led by choral director Cynthia Friesen, the Helena Choir brings together people experiencing cognitive decline, their care partners, volunteers, and community members through the simple but powerful act of singing together. Whether you join our Tuesday or Wednesday group, you’ll find a welcoming space where singers of all abilities and experience levels can show up, feel included, and connect through music.

Each week, we spend an hour exploring songs together, followed by time to sit, chat, and build relationships over coffee. It’s a gentle, low-pressure way to find community and a sense of belonging. šŸ«‚

With two groups to choose from, there’s now more flexibility to find a time that works for you. If you’d like to be part of the Helena Choir, send us a message or email helenachoir@healtharts.org and come sing with us! by @concertsincarebc
