New series alert!! We’re thrilled to introduce On Main: Taking stock of downtown Concord.

This collaboration between city reporter Catherine McLaughlin and community editor Rachel Wachman takes readers inside the center of New Hampshire’s capital in a brand new way.

About the series:

A decade after the Main Street design project, downtown Concord looks a lot different. By cataloging storefronts and analyzing data, we can more easily assess the progress made and identify areas for growth.

What makes up a healthy Main Street? What’s the right mix of different business types for Concord? What changes would people like to see in the next ten years and how does the city get there?

To answer these questions, we created an interactive map of downtown Concord so you can engage with the myriad of businesses populating the Main Street area. By mapping 183 different storefronts, we sought to uncover some of the lesser-known facts about downtown, such as who serves as landlord to the most businesses, what exactly remains open after 8 p.m., and just how many hair salons there are downtown.

Check out the map, stay up-to-date with our reporting and fill out the community survey at https://www.concordmonitor.com/on-main/ by @concordmonitor

About a thousand people gathered for another “No Kings” rally on Main Street in Concord on Saturday, this time with a focus on getting people out to vote.

The midterm elections are 17 days away, on Nov. 3, and organizers said they wanted people to double-check their voter registration and make a plan for Election Day.

A fire broke out at a home on Route 4 in Epsom on Thursday morning, leading authorities to close the town’s main thoroughfare during rush hour and delaying the opening of town hall.

The blaze left its toll on the house, according to Epsom’s Deputy Fire Chief Warren “Ted” Virgin.

“There’s a lot of water and fire damage. We haven’t assessed exactly how much yet,” he said.

For years, a Concord resident has complained to the city that a section of a wooded city trail is a blight on his property.

The conservation commission is expected to weigh in Wednesday night on René Marro's request to close down the portion of the West End Farm Trail nearest his property.

"Not only can we not use backyardyard to sit and enjoy a meal on our deck in the summertime without gawkers on the superhuman highway that was created behind our house by the city," he wrote to city officials in 2024. "We no longer feel safe and can't even let our dogs out to go to the bathroom or play due to the unmonitored, rude and inconsiderate people who roam the trail."

Less than a year after opening, Pecorino's Italian Restaurant in Chichester has closed its doors. The eatery off Route 28 featured vibrant stripes of green, white and red lining — the colors of the Italian flag — promising fresh pizza and cheesy pollo parmigiana.

Owner Julian Pecorino assumed leadership over the location after Diomedes Restaurant shuttered last winter.

"I took it over with the premise that if I can find someone to take it over in the meanwhile, that'd be great," he said.

Green T-shirts representing Mill Brook School filled the Concord School Board meeting Monday, showing support for the school's special education students and staff.

Clad in green, Lindsay McGee, the lead special education teacher of the autism program at the school, said she was short two educational assistants and was struggling to meet the needs of students.

“I’m able to see one first-grade reading group right now. I’m supposed to see three different grade levels twice a day for 30 minutes for reading and math, and that’s not happening,” McGee said.

The elementary school, serving pre-kindergarten through second grade, had the biggest influx in students requiring additional support this year. Lacking educational assistants, staff said they are stretched thin.

Fall is now in full swing in New Hampshire — truly a sight to be seen," writes Engagement Editor Emilia Wisniewski. "Over the weekend, a friend and I trekked up the Oak Hill Fire Tower trail in Concord early in the morning and saw the autumn leaves in all their glory.

"We climbed the steep steps up the top of the tower, where the cool air came at us in full force and we could see mountain peaks all around us. I hope to climb some of those peaks by October's end to take it all in fully (and hopefully avoid the leaf peeper traffic, if possible).

"If you're not hiking a trail or climbing a mountain this weekend, a beloved local festival will showcase the fantastic New England trees all the same. The Warner Fall Foliage Festival is coming back for its 79th year and will have a lot more to offer than just its leaves."
