PNW Dreams

The PNW comes with belabored civility, masking the power of nature that longs to spill forth. Forboding clouds before a storm. Hesitation preluding the preditor’s strike. Still in the volumptuous and libertine scene before you. Vistas of transcendental morality all around.

Over the past short weeks I traveled the whale-themed island of Whidbey, with unsuccessful viewing of said whales or other marketed porpoises and orcas. Then, upward and inland to Mount Rainier National park only for clouds to cover her magnificence and spoil the sight of a rare meteor shower. Finally, rucking again to the west and even further south, I arrived at the Oregon coast with the scene having nothing more to display than trees engulfed in thick mist blanketing any sight beyond. Ironically, a whale gave a short showboating of it’s breathing technique while just arriving on the beach, only to dissapear before I could reach my camera.

Dissapointed? Sure. But, failure is the encystment of past beliefs. Liberating my imaginationation and harnessing creativity I captured what I could.

Tabor Dance at Cathedral Park
Here, beneath the great concrete arches of the St. Johns Bridge, a remarkable gathering unfolds. As the summer sun begins its slow descent, the species Homo festivus emerges from the surrounding city — drawn, as if by ancient instinct, to the rhythm pulsing through the cathedral of steel and stone.

Observe the whimsical thrill seeker, balanced upon a single taut line, defying gravity with the quiet confidence of one who has done this many times before. Nearby, the young perform elaborate courtship displays amid a shimmering cloud of bubbles. And at the heart of it all, the rhythm-keeper — headphones aloft — commands the movement of hundreds with nothing but a steady beat.

It is, without question, one of the PNW’s most joyful spectacles. Tabor Dance. Portland, Oregon. Long may it thrive. 🌿🎧 @tabordance

“ …never again will we wake up in the morning and think Who am I? What is my purpose in life? Does it really, cosmically speaking, matter if I don’t get up and go to work? For today we will finally learn once and for all the plain and simple answer to all these nagging little problems of Life, the Universe and Everything!”

Olympic National Park is not a museum. It is not a photograph. It is a living, breathing, enormously complicated system in which eagle and raccoon and heron each play their part — as they have, without interruption, for longer than our civilization has existed.

The park receives nearly three million visitors a year. They come to walk among the world’s largest remaining temperate rainforests, to stand on beaches where the only footprints are their own, to watch, perhaps, a white-headed eagle drop from a piling into still grey water.

They come, I think, because somewhere deep within us, we still remember what it felt like to be part of all this.

The question now — the only question that truly matters — is whether we will have the wisdom to ensure that those who come after us can remember it, too.

“No one will protect what they don’t care about, and no one will care about what they have never experienced.”
