When thinking about sustainability, local artist @_gregwashere_ remembered a favorite saying of his grandparents: “Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.”

The phrase originated during the 1930s - 1940s. Those hard years necessitated that people be creative in the ways they used and reused what they had and the saying became a popular way to encourage what we now call “repurposing” or “up-cycling.” Greg updated the phrase to reflect the project’s goals of raising awareness around paint stewardship.

The project’s mash-up style evokes reuse in another media, collage, as if the mural itself was comprised of disparate paper cutouts coming together to form something new and beautiful.

“Empire Rising” ✨ 2024
Providence, RI
A piece celebrating the intersection of queer culture and historical Chinatown in Providence ❤️ absolutely loved researching and filling this piece with contextual details, textures, characters and flourishes. Memorable processes include getting to speak to the leader of Providence Pride & local purveyors of the original Chinatown’s history, applying color & life to portraits of historical figures of whom we only had b/w photos, researching the history of covert queer hangout spots and working out how to honor their history visually, accessing/mining the archives, getting to render some ornate Asian pieces that I am obsessed with, meeting Providence’s best Asian drag queen (hellooo @laddanurv !), getting the full tour of PVD’s queer nightlife (fruit loop ➰) and trying to stop my hand from going numb while I sleep. Guided tour highlights!

I had the pleasure of guiding two street art tours through Vienna thanks to @callelibre & @ais_vienna. Taking visitors around to see murals old and new by artists like @janaundjs @misterwoodland @mantrarea Roa @frauisa @francofasolijaz @frank__maria and many more! (Forgot to take pics at every stop) 🤦🏽

Shout out to the 40+ people who walked the 2+ hours through a scorcher of a day! Thank you @karmaeva_anuta for putting it together. Thank you @pearlteinert for bringing your IB Art students down. And what a treat to get to meet my old business partner Nathalie Halgand in front of one of our old murals by @bezt_etam

From May 11 to May 21, artist, mural curator and facilitator, and AISV alumnus Nick Platzer visited our Art Foundations, Art Explorations, and IB Art students. Throughout his visit, Nick led hands-on workshops focused on graffiti writing, stenciling, and collaborative art. He encouraged students to experiment with alternative methods and use different tools to leave their mark, emphasizing the open, experimental nature of public art.

The workshops integrated directly with each class’s current curriculum. In Art Foundations, students built on their recent street art unit to discuss audience, messaging, and street art safety protocols in Vienna while working on a collaborative canvas near the High School office. Art Foundations students along with Art Explorations students practiced graffiti lettering and created collaborative mixed media artworks on canvas. Meanwhile, our IB Art students took a field trip to view a local mural in progress, where Nick discussed site-specific work, aesthetic techniques, and the practical considerations of placing art in public spaces. Back in the classroom, Nick also provided individual tutorials to help these advanced students refine their independent project plans and incorporate professional feedback.

The students enjoyed the opportunity to learn from an industry professional who once walked the same halls. Seeing an alumnus successfully navigate the art world offered our students a tangible connection between classroom concepts and creative careers.

„Morning in Barna“ by Jaz / Argentina

„The mural is based on a series of paintings where I reproduce the intimacy of my daily life since the pandemic. In the time I lived in Barcelona I shared the apartment with friends from around the world, one of my long term roomies is Natalia, an Argentinian trans woman. I painted her with the cat of the apartment, Daniel.” via @francofasolijaz

Excited to announce that @confluxartprojects will be working together with @callelibre to bring @francofasolijaz back to Vienna!
.
In May of 2013, INOPERAbLe first brought Jaz to Vienna for a solo show, a group exhibit at @galerie_hilger_next, and to paint a few murals around town. This mural went hand in hand with his solo show “Cult to the Character” and was painted on our rotating wall at Siebensterngasse (more info on that as well soon 😉)
